You should totally go to church so you can make friends with people like this! |
^^ this is the kind of thing you learn in church (except for unitarian congregations). You learn that your way is True and other religions are not. In contrast, in an academic course, you learn the facts about various religions, including that some of them believe they are the one, true religion. |
People are often horrified when they see how violent the Bible is. They didn't cherrypick to see it that way - it jumped out at them while studying the Bible to become better CHristians |
Guess you haven't met any evangelicals who push "you're going to HELL" in your face 24x7? Lucky you. |
Ah, the “everybody is becoming atheist like me” poster has found the thread. |
Better not to go. You'd turn out like this one! |
Yeah no. My responsibility is to teach my kids about the world in age appropriate ways. I am not abdicating that duty to “ease family relationships”. I talk to them about what I believe - are there are circumstances in which you would choose to do otherwise with your kids? |
PP who started this sub thread. I understand the confusion. I allow (and encourage) my in-laws to take the kids to religious services when they desire. There is no conflict there. The issue is that the kids are getting to the age that they don’t want to go anymore. I don’t “make” them and allow them to decide something else is more important- a birthday party, doing hw, lazing around in pjs, whatever. I tried to suggest to my ILs that pushing at this age, especially when not actively backed up by the parents (me and hubs) is likely to be a waste of time. But it’s their call to make. |
Believing Christians have that experience -- and get over it, because there are ways of rationalizing the text. Many religious people believe that the Bible is not meant to be taken literally. |
| We went to a UU Congregation from when my children were preschool aged to HS graduation. My mother was happy. For her, Church was more about community. |
Then you quit? If so, it seems that the community didn't mean so much to you. |
. No, we moved . No UU congregation near us. |
The Bible has a lot of violence because it's about real life. |
Is that how they're justifying the horrors in the Bible these days? "God was just showing us life as it really is." How do they explain the talking donkey? |
Sinners? The individuals PP listed are callous sociopaths and deviants. |
