I like it. I know there will be pushback against putting ATS at Jamestown, but we can't justify keeping a neighborhood undercapacity just because the building is "tucked away". |
Again, they aren't moving ATS. And Montessori needs a new home once the demolish Henry. |
SB isn’t going to worry about moving Montessori from Henry in this process, they’re banking on being able to figure out something to create more elementary seats before that. |
Do you have a workable solution for Key immersion that doesn’t involve moving ATS and doesn’t have even worse optics than moving ATS? |
DP. Move immersion to Jamestown. Montessori to Carlin Springs. Jamestown - Immersion Carlin Springs - Montessori ATS - ATS Campbell - EL Claremont - Immersion |
If it's moving in 5 years, it needs to be part of this process. They new drop identity the site, publicly. If they're going to put it at W-L, they had better get the community to buy-in. |
Sorry, they need to identify the site now |
Why do they need community buy-in? When will we get community buy-in for an option school at Nottingham/Tuckahoe/Jamestown? |
That's what they should do, but that's not what's happening. Listen to all of the CIP meetings, not just the parts about the elementary schools. They know this is going to be an issue, they're pretty much just banking on being able to somehow get high school seats back out of the Ed Center in time to move Montessori there so they can tear down Henry for the Career Center site. It's a total shell game. |
Immersion. Isn't. Going. To. Jamestown. I swear, you can always tell the people who don't watch the meetings. |
|
They will not move Immersion to Jamestown. Staff and the SB have said over and over again that it has to be near spanish speaking communities.
The only viable option for Jamestown is Montessori or EL. I doubt they will seriously consider Jamestown, but they really should While it is at one far end of the county, it is not very walkable and could add trailers to expand any program. |
Even though it would be more expensive, I think they'd move ATS to Jamestown before they move EL (and they're not moving Montessori in this process, stop trying to make that happen). With the Campbell eligibility being so limited for most of its history, they have very little track record to go off of as to how much the program will appeal to North Arlington families. That makes moving EL to Jamestown a huge gamble, because they know they'd lose a bunch of South Arlington families who wouldn't want their kids to go to school that far away with no sense of whether they'd be able to fill all of those seats again with North Arlington families. ATS is so popular with everyone that they could move it to whichever end of the earth they like and they'd still be able to fill it. It might not have the same diversity it does now (which would be the case for any option program they move further north), but they'll get butts in all of the seats. I think this is exactly why the process was set up to just set locations during this round and then place each program at a site later. The staff and SB can know privately what they think the arrangement will eventually be, but they face far fewer battles if everyone can believe their pet option program is going to get their preferred location. And then once the locations are all a done deal and not open to revisiting, they can fight the battles of what goes where knowing they've limited the possibilities. |
Is it going to the Ed Center? |
Not decided right now, but the staff said in a recent CIP meeting that they were hoping to have swing space available at the Ed Center by 2022, assuming the high school seats could be move out by them. If I'm understanding correctly, the original notion had been that the swing space would eventually be used for middle school seats, but then the staff suggested it might be used for elementary seats instead. Which made everyone lose their minds, because the people focused on high schools were unhappy at the suggestion they might take away the Ed Center seats so soon (because who's going to send their kid there if they know it's only going to be for a couple of years and then they have to move again?), the middle school people were upset that they might not get the extra swing seats they thought they'd have, and the Montessori elementary families were unhappy to have it laid clear that Henry really is just a temporary solution. And then NVD ripped into the staff for creating all of the drama. It was pretty good. |
| The initial 800 seats for the CC are proposed for 2024-25. Those aren't the seats that will replace the Ed Center seats. Those are the other portion of the 1300 HS seats that have been TBD for two CIP processes. Building more seats at the CC to replace the Ed Center seats will happen in phase 2, which must be after 2024-25. So the SB probably plans to deal with where to move Montessori around the same time that it is planning for the new S Arlington elementary school around 2025. They probably also don't want too much attention paid to the tens of millions of dollars it's going to cost to replace the Henry seats if they tear down that building. Those costs aren't being mentioned anywhere. |
