Just make Jamestown an Option School Already

Even after Reed opens, that seat shortage is expected to be disproportionately in the north, especially NE.

The NE will have the most available space? I thought it was the NW?

The seat *shortage* will be disproportionately in NE. Shortage means not having as much as you need, as opposed to an excess or abundance.

Jamestown has plenty of space. Once Key and ASF are true neighborhood schools we will have plenty of seats in NE.

If they move Key out of NE (such as by using Jamestown to house a program), that will give NE a lot of relief, but it will still be bursting at the seams. Especially if Jamestown become option, because a lot of those kids are going to be moved to Taylor and Taylor kids will be moved into the Key/ASFS area. Which isn't to say Jamestown shouldn't be an option site, it makes a lot of sense, just that NE will still be tight, especially with all of the new housing developments already pending or approved over there.

Many of the Jamestown seats will end up at Discovery. Because planning units will shift west as Reed and McKinley absorb PUs.

Does Jamestown have zero trailers right now? If so, is it the only trailer-free school in APS right now?

Yes, Jamestown has zero trailers now.
So do Discovery, Abington, Drew, and Hofffman Boston (all zero)
Nottingham has one.
Ashlawn and Campbell have 2 each.
All the other schools have more; between 4-10.

Some are sitting empty, though. Barcroft has 10 I think, but not all, or even any of them, are being utilized right now, but they aren't taking them away.

Neither Abingdon nor Discovery can take any trailers, so just saying they have no trailers doesn't mean anything. I don't know about Abingdon, but if Discovery could take trailers, it would have them because the school is at 99% capacity and specials are on carts.

Yes, Barcroft has 10. I can only tell you how many trailers each school has on its site this school year, not if they are all fully used right now, or sitting there, waiting for relocation.

... and as far as Discovery; yes, I know the site cannot take any trailers, unless they put them on the middle school lot, the same will be true for Fleet.

If you ask me, it's another sign of lack of foresight, and leadership, that brand new schools (Discovery) or brand new additions (Ashlawn) already have a need for trailers.

Nottingham also has specials on carts because they had an unexpected population jump and had to add a couple of additional grade-level classes. APS will probably make them stick it out one more year with only one trailer and then when they remove the trailers from Williamsburg will give them one or two more.

If anything Barcroft is using maybe one (although I think they said at a SB meeting or work session that they're all vacant). The building has capacity of 460 but current enrollment (including preschool) of 435.

I will not deny that the staff has been really off in some of their projections, but I think we need to be somewhat realistic in our expectations. This is an incredibly transient area, which makes it very difficult to create accurate projections more than a year or two out.

So what will the theme be if Jamestown is an option school?

There's already a Traditional School, a Science Focus School, perhaps a "Posh School"

That's not true. Barcroft is using all of them, even though the school is under-capacity this year. Even in past years before the enrollment peaked, the trailers were used for the early childhood programs. These are also the oldest trailers in the system and are supposed to be replaced with "newer" ones no longer being used elsewhere.

They put the preschool in the trailers even though there’s empty space in the building? I’d be surprised if that were true.

Not surprised Discovery is already at capacity - the neighborhood has had a ton of smaller/older houses torn down in the last few years, with 5,000 SF new builds going up in their place. A lot of older long-time owners have moved out once their kids are out of Yorktown, and the neighborhood is attractive to young families.

If Barcroft put preschoolers in the trailers, it might be because they have a better bathroom arrangement than the classrooms inside the school, or they're trying to group same-grade classes together and that's how it worked out. We're at ATS and we've had preschoolers in the trailers at one point, though I think the 2nd graders are there now.

I'm a Barcroft parent. They have used all of the trailers my entire time there (the past 8 years), including for the early childhood programs. They have also had the entire 5th grade in them for the past 3 years. Yes, even with "empty space in the building."

But why? I'm not accusing you of lying, I just can't imagine what the justification for this could be. Ten trailers is basically the Barcroft building half over again. What are they using them all for, and why aren't those students in the building instead?
