Obama was a transfer student to Columbia. He transferred from Occidental College in Los Angeles, which is an intense and elite liberal arts school. Presumably he had excellent grades at Occidental, therefore SAT scores would be less relevant to Columbia.

Furthermore, the SATs in the 1980s did not take into account writing abilities. Even in high school, Obama was known to be a prolific and high skilled writer. It's a bit of a sick and farcical tragedy that the SATs did not incorporate writing abilities until the late 00s, given the importance of it to our daily lives.

You can find plenty of white kids who didn't do that great in high school, spent a year at a so-so college, then transferred to a selective school. Hey, that sounds like the current president! Who has assured us he's a genius.

I'm white and my SAT scores were probably just above middling but I was accepted into an Ivy in part because of where I was applying from (rural nowhere). I never studied once for the SAT, never took a class, didn't know anyone else who did and I couldn't have afforded it anyway. SAT scores tell you a lot less than you think they do.

Rich whites get affirmative action all the time because of the opportunities their wealth buy them. And yet it's poor black students that people like you are constantly complaining about.

You do realize Einstein dropped out of high school at 15 and initially failed the college entrance exams, right?

When he started school, he did very well-he was a creative and persistent problem-solver-but he hated the rote, disciplined style of the teachers at his Munich school, and he dropped out when he was 15. Then, when he took the entrance examination for a polytechnic school in Zurich, he flunked. (He passed the math part, but failed the botany, zoology and language sections.) Einstein kept studying and was admitted to the polytechnic institute the following year, but even then he continued to struggle: His professors thought that he was smart but much too pleased with himself, and some doubted that he would graduate.
