Leaving 18 year old son alone overnight

So at 17, I can't leave them alone for the week but at 18, I'm a lunatic if I don't??

18 years olds can go to war, have children, buy homes, work full time jobs, start businesses, buy and drive cars, be guardians to other minor children, own a credit card, travel the world and pretty much everything else.

Your 'child' should be able to stay at home alone long before 18. If your 18 year old still needs a parent at home with them, then either as parents you have completely infantilized your child or you have just completely failed as a parent and have done a terrible job of raising a child to adulthood.

Of course 18-year-olds can legally do all these things.

They cannot, however, legally drink. Or legally do weed. Or legally host parties where they serve alcohol and weed to other 18-year-olds.

It's not "infantilizing" your child to recognize that perfectly normal and otherwise mature 18-year-olds are going to see this is an opportunity to do all these things. It's actually a failure of parenting to be in denial about how the teen brain works.
Your child to recognize this.

If you are anxious about safety alone in the house (to the point of therapy) you should just get an alarm system OP, its worth it for your peace. If you are worried about him feeding himself, well, what?! He is 18 and its summer, does he not eat during the day? While at work? to and from friends homes? I think maybe 50Z% of my meals the summer I turned 18 were me and a friend grabbing a slice and a salad after our respective jobs- there is no way he eats every meal with mom!

I hope you're joking. Is he potty trained? That would be my biggest concern given how you're behaving ??

Seriously, 18 year olds can join the marines. If an 18 year can't be alone at home for a weekend and not starve/burn down the house, then you've failed as a parent. Truly.

Oh please. Only in the US would the concern be having a beer or two and smoking some pot. This is ridiculous. By 18, you should also have taught your kid about how to handle those things (and what kind of beer they like). Jeez.

lol

and baby outfits, baby toys

no baths. he might drown.

You're a bitch. Really. This was unnecessary.

Every parent and kid is different. 95% kids that age have or would be able to stay home along. Some would not. For many reasons. Just answer the damn question and shut your mouth.

ANY 18 year old should be able to stay home alone overnight unless s/he is special needs or a drug addict.

An 18 year has had 18 years of developing decision making skills, problem solving skills, learning personal responsibility, learning how to respect others and their property, learning how to act....that is why at 18 they are 100% responsible legally for their own decisions and why they are allowed to make major decisions independently. If you can't leave your 18 year old home alone because they will trash your house and break the law...then you have failed in helping them learn the life skills they need to be a functional adult.

I must be the worst mom in the world. I left my 18 year old for three weeks at home alone while I was in Europe and then I sent him alone to our place in CO for three weeks. And then he is off to college. He has always been really responsible kid, that is not to say he won't do stupid things, I suppose that s a given, just how stupid is the question? But, I am determined not to be like so many other parents from my country(Eastern Europe) who baby their kids until 35 and then are surprised when "kid" never gets a job and is a useless weight on them.
