I have a 7th grader who got into both, & my 5th grader just got into both (phew). When 7th grader got in, we went to both info nights and then made "dates" w/ kids we knew at each program, took them out for hot chocolate & got more details. Some things that became important in my daughter's decision making were: block schedule vs regular (affects general schedule & # of electives), relative weaknesses of non magnet classes (& how we could augment), general school climate, types of projects they were doing, etc. It was helpful to consider the school's info and a kid's (& parent's) perspective who has been through it. My 5th grader will do the same -- go to the info nights and take older friends (& hopefully her sister!) out for a hot chocolate info date!

Both programs are great. For us, it was important to see what resonates with the kids. I was surprised my 7th grader chose Takoma over Eastern, since she is all about writing, reading & theatre. But, her rational was that she could continue to do that independently, and she really wanted to explore computer science and science, since she hadn't had as much experience in those areas. She figured middle school was a good time to find out more. I agreed!

My son got into the Humanities program at Poolesville, but was hoping for Computer Science. Does anyone know if Humanties students go to regular MCPS math courses or do they have the option to take some of the magnet math and computer science classes as electives? If not, I am thinking the math/CS offerings at the W school he is slated for would be a more challenging option.

Congrats on acceptance to PHS. My son who is a 10th grader in the PHS SMCS program has mentioned that there are several non-SMCS students in his pre-calc and above math classes. Best to confirm at the open house.

My daughter got into the middle school magnet program at Eastern and was added to the wait pool for Takoma Park. She was not previously at an HGC.

Poolesville is very unique. Your child can take math with SMAC 100%. My daughter is in SMAC and they have plenty of kids from Ecology in Math class. She does not know Humanity kids, but that probably not many Humanity kids are interested in Math.

Sorry Yes for Math, probably No for Computer Science (because of block schedule) in Poolesville in 9th and 10Th. But he can take any magnet classes he wants from SMAC in 11th and 12th (no block schedule during that time.)
Is he waitlisted for SMAC?

That is a WHOLE LOT.. considering that Takoma takes 100 students out of the neighborhood total.. out of which 60% supposed to be from HGC..
so that makes 60 students from ALL Gifted Centers from the area.. and if 30 students comes from your Highly Gifted Center alone
that is one smart bunch!

Unless you meant 30 students in total get into gifted MS and that would mean both Takoma and Eastern
so 30 students divided by 2 schools.. 15 students takes spots in each Gifted Middle? And from one Gifted Center alone?

My quick independent calculations and estimates are as follows:
Two schools: Eastern, Takoma, each takes give or take 100 students so total 200
out of which 60% are from Gifted centers from around the County..
so that makes 120 kids from gifted.

Since 6 gifted centers feeds into each Gifted Middle so ..
120 Gfited Kids accepted.. divided by 6 centers = 20 per center.
Each has 3 classes so 20 divided by 3 gives you about .. 6.5 kid per class
accepted to either Takoma or Easter..

Does this sound about right ? - question to those who had their kids at
Takoma or Eastern? Do those numbers check?

The year my dc went from Eastern to the blair magnet there were only 4 students. It's not evenly distributed between Takoma magnet and Eastern.

Now, not many apply from Eastern -- so I can't speak to the acceptance rate.

I think you meant to say not AS many - but about 600 apply for 100 spots for Eastern vs. 900 for 100-ish spots for TP. You decide based on your child's interest - a child who loves Science/Computers and is eh about reading/writing would HATE Eastern - Eastern has LOTS and LOTS of writing and LOTS and LOTS of reading.

Well, something is not right here. You cannot go to W school get in Humanities or SMAC, unless you have strange family situation... Possible for Ecology...
However, our family choose Poolesville over W some time ago, and child is very happy.

OP of the different TPMS stats. Yes, we are in boundary too. Strange that they did separate sets if avgs & interesting the in boundary was higher. Also, Hey, neighbor!
