I hate smokers!!!

Nope sorry. My dog isn't giving you cancer or harming you in any way. He doesn't even smell bad.

Last time I was in Europe I met a Scottish woman who took me aside and told my that she wasn't coming back to the states any time soon- "Americans just don't treat smokers right!" DH and I laughed and laughed about that one. We think the smokers are the #1 worst part of traveling overseas to Europe, Asia, Africa, you name it. You can't escape the nasty smoke.

I'm not telling you how to raise your kid and I don't particularly like cigarette smoke (it stinks) but if the smoker is outside it is really not that hard to walk away from them and their smoke cloud.

If the smell of smoke bothers him so much, you should teach him how to politely address this with the person smoking in the rare instant where he can't walk away. This would likely be a lot more effective & certainly teach him how to communicate his thoughts in a less obnoxious manner.

Why did he get stuck walking behind a smoker? If you were in line you should have politely asked the person to please put out the cigarette as smoke makes your child ill. If he was just walking behind a smoker in a crowd of people, you all should have moved away from the smoker. As annoying as cigarette smoke might be, vomit is absolutely disgusting. No one wants to step in vomit.

Plenty of smokers who would put their cigarettes out or find another place to smoke if someone politely asked them to do so..I've actually seen it happen multiple times. .

I'm guessing the vast majority of the negative reactions smokers have towards you have a lot more to do with the clear disdain you have for them as human beings than with their unwillingness to put out their cigarettes.
