Do you need alcohol that much?

Of course you are.

OP, everything you said about drinking I would say about religion. I certainly can live without it, many other people can't and damn straight if it hasn't been to blame for a multitude of social ills and bad decisions that affect others. If you need religion, your life is unfulfilling. Get a better job, or therapy. Don't numb it with church services every Sunday. I know I have every right to complain about the number of fanatics, proselytizers and their crimes committed in the name of some made-up supreme being.

Have a nice weekend.

You get the award for most stupidest analogy on DCUM. Church related crimes disease = alcohol related crimes and disease. Alrighty then...

No, not interested in prohibition. The US did a great job of exposing the dangers of smoking through the media, print ads, commercials, etc...so the same can be done with alcohol.

What is this addiction in our society that makes it impossible for people to give up alcohol? Is it at all possible to have a great party without alcohol. If you need alcohol to enjoy life, maybe something is wrong.

Thoughts?

I agree. Although, I am curious, those who drink, how often do you drink and can you give us examples of how drinking makes things easier for you?

Alcohol is a liquid drug. It is not the same as food and air conditioning.

So is coffee. BFD.

Anonymous wrote:Why does op keep accusing drinkers of drinking and driving? I drink probably three times per week on average, a glass of wine with dinner, a couple of beers while watching the game, but I honestly have never driven after more than one drink. He seems to be making assumptions of evil drinkers. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm going to go open a bottle of wine. And since it's Friday, I'll probably empty it with the help of my husband. Oh the horrors!

It seems that the only drinkers OP knows are alcoholics; therefore (or so OP concludes) that all drinkers are alcoholics.

Alcohol related crime and disease is a huge problem. Take off your blinders. Just because you enjoy getting a buzz doesn't mean alcohol isn't also the cause of many problems in our society.

Hmmm. Religion has been the cause for many wars and deaths. Far more than alcohol.

That OP is ostensibly an angry vegetarian non-drinker should have been clue enough.

The beverage industry would collapse (according to the article) if the top 10% of drinkers were encouraged to reduce their intake. There are a lot of people who can gently handle their alcohol, and then there are a sizable number of people who are living drunk everyday and keeping the beverage industry in the money. Think about all the health issues, accidents, deaths, violence that alcohol brings to our society via those who drink too much... yet, we don't REALLY have the guts to get the abusers to reduce or stop.

I read another article recently that referenced a study showing that most people underestimate how much they drink by 50% A lot of people are fooling themselves.

OP here. I am thinking about HG, and have a mixture of rage at whoever might have harmed her but also frustration with HG. Drinking excessively, then walking alone, here's a perfect example of typical college behavior throughout our country and no one gives a shit to do anything about it. What about the deaths as a result of people who drive while intoxicated also? Or pregnant women who drink? What about the burden on the health care industry? What the hell is wrong with our society that inflicts such a punishment on ourselves? What is this addiction people have with alcohol that makes them think they need it to enjoy a party? Sorry, it can not be equated with food, milk or cheese, or owning a pet. I will not address the ridiculous comparison to church or religion. None of these cause a similar burden on society.

OP here. Oh my. Last time I checked there isn't a legal limit on coffee consumption. You will say anything, however silly, to deny that we have a problem with alcohol in our society.

Don't worry about me, PP. I'm fine. But if you can't handle your drinking, it becomes my problem, doesn't it? So I'm going to complain and you need to hear it.

Please tell me exactly how it becomes your problem if I can't handle my drinking. I am having several beers on my porch and won't be driving for another 48 hours. And this is your problem how?

Read the thread from the beginning. You did not understand.

You are correct. I just had a sip of wine and it threw me off. Most stupid. Better now?

Why will you not address the religion comparison? Have you never studied history and the causes of wars? Are you not paying attention now?

In fact, most Americans either drink not at all or very little. I think OP's idea that those people who drink, drink to excess is not backed up by actual data.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/09/25/think-you-drink-a-lot-this-chart-will-tell-you/

Here's a little data to add to this discussion too: fewer people die from terrorism in our country yet how much does our government spend fighting terrorism? Alcohol related crime and disease are enough of a burden to our society that we have to address it. To be precise, $223.5 billion is what it is costing our society. It causes 10% of deaths among working age adults alone. So don't try winning this one. You won't be able to. And this isn't from a holy than thou perspective. These are the facts and it makes me sick to my stomach. If it doesn't make you cringe, something is wrong with you and you're contributing to the problem.

You are clearly an atheist so move your point over to the religion thread or a new off topic thread.
