Do you need alcohol that much?

The beverage industry would collapse (according to the article) if the top 10% of drinkers were encouraged to reduce their intake. There are a lot of people who can gently handle their alcohol, and then there are a sizable number of people who are living drunk everyday and keeping the beverage industry in the money. Think about all the health issues, accidents, deaths, violence that alcohol brings to our society via those who drink too much... yet, we don't REALLY have the guts to get the abusers to reduce or stop.

I read another article recently that referenced a study showing that most people underestimate how much they drink by 50% A lot of people are fooling themselves.

OP here. I am thinking about HG, and have a mixture of rage at whoever might have harmed her but also frustration with HG. Drinking excessively, then walking alone, here's a perfect example of typical college behavior throughout our country and no one gives a shit to do anything about it. What about the deaths as a result of people who drive while intoxicated also? Or pregnant women who drink? What about the burden on the health care industry? What the hell is wrong with our society that inflicts such a punishment on ourselves? What is this addiction people have with alcohol that makes them think they need it to enjoy a party? Sorry, it can not be equated with food, milk or cheese, or owning a pet. I will not address the ridiculous comparison to church or religion. None of these cause a similar burden on society.

Why will you not address the religion comparison? Have you never studied history and the causes of wars? Are you not paying attention now?

You are clearly an atheist so move your point over to the religion thread or a new off topic thread.

I am not. I am a different poster. I am just curious why one is so terrible and the other isn't when we all know that religion has been used to justify a lot of really terrible things.

I quit drinking due to medication. Here's what I observed:
1. I lost 5 lbs. Yay!
2. I lost some big drinker "friends". Boo!
3. We spend less in restaurants. Yay!
4. We spend more time watching tv to unwind. Boo!

Otherwise, no major changes. Alcohol isn't evil. I like it but other than changing some holiday recipes, it's not a mournable loss. Still can't understand judgy teetotalers.

OP here. Oh my. Last time I checked there isn't a legal limit on coffee consumption.

Last time I checked, there isn't a legal limit on alcohol consumption either. You fucking moron.

Now you're blaming Hannah for her disappearance. You're a charmer, OP. Next maybe you'll say women who are raped while dressed provocatively were asking for it. Maybe they had a glass of wine while getting ready.

Who stops being friends with someone bc they don't drink? I drink but have plenty of friends who don't.

OP sounds like she has a mental disorder of some sort.

I had a small circle of friends who run through nearly a bottle of wine each watching certain tv shows together. Apparently, they think I am not as much fun if I'm sober.

You really are too stupid to argue with. Your stupidity combined with your self-righteousness, combined with victim blaming = you're kind of an asshole.

Try telling that to a cop when you get arrested while driving intoxicated… moron.

Yes, lives are stressful and unfulfilling, and yes it can help you relax to have a glass of wine. Sometimes your knee hurts and it can help you relax to take an Advil. It is up to each person to realize when they actually have a sprained knee and need more appropriate treatment than Advil, or if they actually have depression or an anxiety disorder and need more appropriate treatment than wine. But OP is sounding unfairly fundamentalist to assume that anyone who enjoys the relaxing effects of alcohol now and then is bound to kill someone eventually driving drunk.

Of course there are people with significant alcohol problems. It sounds like maybe you have been around too many of them lately and it has upset you. But it's not everywhere and it's not the norm, and in fact it is much less common than a generation or two ago.

And hey, OP, do you keep checking back on this thread to see how people have answered? Do you find yourself getting angry about it and wanting to have the last word? Are you sure you're not dangerously addicted to DCUM?

I'm an unbiased referee here and I do say that the first pp was right here. There is no legal limit to what you can ingest, only a limit to your blood alcohol while driving. Is there someone on here who thinks that everyone who drinks also drives drunk?

Anonymous wrote:I am the OP. Sorry folks if my thread upsets the drinkers. Apparently there are a lot of drinkers here (probably drunkards too).

If you need alcohol to lighten up and to have a good time, something is wrong. Either your job is too stressful or your life is unfulfilling. Get therapy, a better job, or change whatever is the source of your stress. Don't numb it with alcohol every weekend (or weeknight), then drive a car, or make bad decisions that affect others, and then come on here arrogantly defending your actions because you were lucky enough to not hurt or kill anyone because of your drinking.

I'm sick of people who can't control their drinking and then make bad decisions as a result of it. There are far too many of you.

We live in an area where parents are actually chaperoning parties for underage kids and providing alcohol too. The parents are equally guilty in fostering a culture of excessive drinkers and contributing to alcohol related crimes.

So am I a pearl clutching, buttock clenched DCUMer? I don't really give a shit if I am. I know I have every right to complain about the number of alcoholics, excessive drinkers, and the alcohol related crimes.

If you can't handle drinking, it's easy...DON'T.DO.IT.AT.ALL.

Okay, great - thanks for the PSA. Feel better now? Think you've actually changed anything?

Who said anything about driving? I'm the PP who had several beers on my porch last night and won't be driving anywhere until tomorrow night. Who is going to arrest me for being over the "legal limit on alcohol consumption"?

OP sounds like the least fun person I've come across in a while. And her reasoning skills really suck! She thinks that any drinking = drunkard = drunk driver = supplying alcohol to minors. There's nothing in between. If you have a glass of wine with dinner, you are all of the above and more.

Oh, I see. The PP hit a nerve with a valid point and you're too much of a chicken shit to address it. Got it.
