A DH here. This sometimes happens. I'm currently in a major crunch at work that happens to culminate on the a day into our vacation. It wasn't obvious when we planned it but I have to be there for my career. Shit happens.

I have a friend like this, very narcissistic personality. Type of person that will invite himself into meetings and conference calls that don't involve him. Instead of not going on vacation he will go and take all of his work with him and work all day everyday at the beach house and then either fly or drive back and forth for a few days in between. This is normally for a week or two. Completely annoying and not worth to be around. No one is THAT important. He's doing something wrong.

Unacceptable. You need to stand up to you boss, otherwise you are cheating or do not care about you wife and family.

Right, but does it happen year after year after year?
