Neighbors kids playing basketball at 6:30am

Anonymous
We have a 7:00am noise restriction also.

But one thing I have learned is that if you are going to start reporting your neighborhood kids for things like this, you better make sure that YOU are on your P's and Q's going forward. Because your neighbors will notice EVERY thing that you do wrong.

I vote for having a nice low-key conversation with the neighbor who owns the hoop. If they are resonavbe and are parents, they should work with you.

What hours do you work that you can sleep until 7:30?

Different PP here. Wake up time for our family is 7:30 too. Gives us all time to get to school/ work by 8.30.

I think noise at 7am is reasonable; 6.30 too early if it is disturbing neighbors.

WTF neighborhood is this I would like to avoid AHOLES like OP.

The cops wouldn't even respond. If they did, they would either be really annoyed, or laugh their asses off depending on what type of day they are having.

Actually they would for a noise violation. Sorry!

No they wouldn't. They might "respond". And they might assure you that they'll talk to the "offending family". But what they'll actually do is head over to the neighbors house and apologize to them for bothering them. They might sit down and have a cup of coffee with the neighbors and laugh about what an asshole you are.

I promise you. This is how it goes.

And I promise you, you are wrong. Grow up and shut up.

Grow up? Really? Says the poster who says "shut up".

Here's how I know I am NOT wrong.

1. I worked for a PD for years in dispatch. I know exactly how officers respond to these types of calls.
2. Both of my older brothers are police officers in different cities. Both are detectives and have been on the force for at least 15 years.
3. My husband was a cop.

I grew up listening to conversations about stupid calls.

And this just happened in our neighborhood, only it was loud music and not basketball. Our neighbor's daughter gets picked up every morning at 6:45 by one of her friends. The music is usually blasting from the car radio. Asshole neighbor on the other side called the police. The officer showed up at her house. Then he walked next door and had coffee with the rest of us while we talked about asshole neighbors who call the cops for stupid shit like this.

No report filed.

Actually, the N. Arlington cops have so little to do that they would probably come by. I agree they probably wouldn't write a report, but they would show up and talk to the kid (in a nice way I hope).

Your jurisdiction should have quiet hours. Find out what they are. If the kids are violating the quiet hours, talk to the parents.

You could even SUPER nicely ask the parents if the boys might be able to wait a bit on, say, Sundays maybe? Bring cookies.

Children, tweens and teenagers live in a bubble that all life is for them. They probably don't even realize that the noise is bothersome, other people are sleeping or you exist.
But
This is where adults and parents come in. To help them realize there are others outside their bubble. Go and speak to the parents, neighborly.

O.P please stop complaining I am trying to train my kids to be "like Mike".
I want my children to get used to waking up to those early morning drills and to realise that they have to work hard to achieve their American Dream.
Isn't this what we all want for our kids?
I am sorry we won't stop practicing till my kids get to the NBA.
Good night O.P

Count me in on expecting my neighbors to follow noise ordinances. Over the summer, I had one precious day to sleep in (and by that, I mean, past 7:00 on a weekend). I probably would have made it till 8:30 had my neighbor not started his yard work. This was some sort of an electric tiller that, to me, sounded like a jack hammer. From the comfort of my bed, I looked up the noise ordinance to see what the hours were -- also remembering when I had napping babies how loud it was at all hours of the day. I can't even remember when I woke up or what the hours were, but he was 5 minutes after the start time for loud noises, so I had to suck it up and get up for coffee instead of sleeping.

Yes, it would have been nice to sleep another half hour. Yes, I still curse this guy under my breath b/c he could have easily started at some normal time on a Saturday. But he was within his rights and I would never do anything anyway. I just wanted to know.

If there is a noise ordinance in your county and they are violating it, who cares if they're getting exercise or your kid has ADHD? Part of living in a community is following rules and learning how you fit in. We can't be expected to keep quiet during the day just b/c someone has a baby who is sleeping. If they are our friend, however, we'd probably think twice about screaming in the back yard.

But if these are teens waking up the neighborhood during quiet hours, then it's appropriate to talk to the parents. I probably wouldn't do it b/c I know how touchy neighbor situations can be...but I would understand if someone else wanted to discuss it. Your personal circumstances are no different than me wanting to sleep a bit more on a Saturday morning. It doesn't matter!

Yes because your "experience" is 100% of what happens all the time. Shut up!

Hey Einstein. Have you heard even one rational person on this thread suggest that calling the cops is a good idea? Most people are smart enough to know better.

Alternatives-

Talk to the kids nicely. Teenagers aren't all assholes. Just tell them the noise is waking up your family. My teens would apologize.

Talk nicely to the parents.

If you live in an HOA, contact them.

Calling the cops because some kids are shooting hoops at 6:30 is insane.

I wish I knew you! I have so many questions about stuff like this. In my next career I want to be a detective, I swear.

Related to this point: I am about as anal retentive as they come but I would never call the cops for something like this. On kids playing basketball? How about a noise machine in the kids' bedrooms? Or adapting some other way? To another poster's point: 6:30 is certainly not remotely the same as 5 am. Please.

I'm surprised by this thread. That would really annoy me. 6:30 is just too damn early to be making noise outside. Yes, most of us are up, and I'm certainly up at that hour, but come on, this isn't unreasonable to be annoyed by this kind of sound in the morning. The kids should have more courtesy than that. What are we teaching our kids these days - that they can do whatever they want? The parents should teach some basic manners, and that includes not shooting hoops at 6:30 in the morning.
