Neighbors kids playing basketball at 6:30am

on a weekend - I could understand your frustration but on a weekday?

Your poor angels are still asleep and you don't want to wake them up? Stop coddling them, and stop with the entitled attitude. You don't live on a deserted island - you live in a major metropolitan area. if quiet is what you seek, go live on a 5 acre plot of land! Oh but wait, that would mean you would live in the - EEEEK! SUBURBS! cant have that now can we?

As a mom of a child who needs to exercise in the morning due to his ADHD, if he chose to shoot hoops in OUR driveway at 6:30am I would welcome it! And if you as my neighbor came to me to complain, I would ask you to spend 20 mins with my DS while he is struggling to do his HW and focus because he has not expended enough energy and his serotonin levels are out of whack.

enough said....go back to bed.

Well, OP must already live in the suburbs or might-as-well be NWDC suburbs if there's any hoop shooting going on on private property around her.

While we're all sorry for the many tribulations you and your son have gone through as the result of his ADHD, it's still your responsibility to keep him from disrupting the activities of others. There's no way 6:30 is an appropriate time to make noise that others can hear in their own homes.

There are noise ordinaces in every neighborhood and I cannot imagine that playing basketball at 6:30am is excluded from that with how loud the ball can bounce and/ or screaming kids.

OP- I would be pissed too, weekend or weekday its NOT acceptable.

Who are you parents that think disrupting your neighbors for your childrens entertainment in the early am is ok? Thank god I do not live around you!

At least they're active.

This.

It's not OP's burden to listen to basketball noises because those kids are waiting for the bus and doing something active to keep themselves busy. Part of growing up means learning to be part of the community, which means respecting the needs of others and being aware how your actions affect those around you. Making noise at 6:30 in the morning is not socially acceptable.

And it's not the children's burden to avoid healthy activity because the OP went to bed late. Part of being an adult means that sometimes you put other people's needs first.

Yep. They are just playing for a few minutes before school. 6:30 is not early. I would just put a loud fan in the kids' rooms if it's waking them up.

I can't imagine a city in which noise ordinances allow public disturbances to begin at 6:30. It's 7:30 in the District, and that's earlier than any I've seen before.

So this is not only OP's definition of "too early".

If the kids were in my neighborhood, and they were high school kids, they would be playing basketball while waiting for the school bus, which comes at 6:30 am. So no, they can't do a workout video inside or go for a run, because they are on their way to school.

So if they were playing outside at 5:00 am, would you still be ok with it? If not, then you agree with my premise but just don't agree that 6:30 is early.

I think 7am is reasonable. In N Arl, I believe that is the earliest a construction company can begin working on an addition to a house. I know - I looked into it when my kids were young and my next door neighbor had an addition going up.

And OP - you better cool off before you talk to the neighbor. The parents may not even be aware of it. Much like people and their barking dogs at all hours.

Then you are an idiot. Its a NOISE ordinance that creates the public disturbance. Do some research and educate yourself.

Children playing with loud equipment outdoors at an inappropriate time is a "public disturbance".

If these kids are boys (and of course they are!), it also seems to me that they've been taught to expect an extra pass because "boys will be boys" and their parents "don't know what to do with their energy" and "you just can't tell them to be respectful-- they don't listen", etc.

It's obvious that they need to be made aware of it.

Oh right-- that's the other excuse I forgot to mention that goes along with "boys will be boys". Seriously, people, how do you not maintain higher standards for your kids?
