Lol! Poor hubby. At lease he can cry into a pot. Of money he earned, because no one else earns money on this thread and is plebes have no idea what it's like to be super super awesome wealthy with jealous friends! That sing toddler songs.

Say what? What does "is plebes" mean? You do know there are lots of really high income people in DC, right? Your friends don't really sound like friends. I would probably reevaluate.

There is so much snark and misinformation in this thread it makes me laugh. And it does sound like a sit-com
Op says that she is with her longtime friend when she wants to make an announcement. Everyone on DCUM assumes that OP is going to reveal her pregnancy. But things go off track when friend starts singing and talking a lot about a kid movie she liked. The OP wonders if her friend might have had too much to drink due to abrupt change in conversation. That flies over everyone’s head in their rush to say OP is crazy and clueless. No one on this board ever drinks? No one ever had the experience of finding out their friend had more to drink than they thought? No drinkers here? Ha ha.
Also the OP does not speech English correctly according to DCUM because she says things like “lucky” instead of “loaded”. “Merry” instead of “drunk on her a**”
After urging from DCUM, OP says, no the announcement is …..OMG….money related. The haters come out in full force. Note that the OP and friend have had many intimate discussions including finances and family. OP is celebrating a death – how else does anyone have money? OP then says they earned it (but gives no amount) and the vitriol goes up another notch. Now she is a c and a husband beater as well. Also a party crasher – although OP says the conversation took place in a restaurant.
DCUMers look worse than OP in my opinion.

whoa, let's go back a notch. And I'll tell you why there's snark:

OP is with longtime friend and wants to make an announcement - who makes an "announcement" about getting a chunk of money? How does that go exactly. "ting, ting, ting (fork clinking the wine glass) Excuse me everyone, Joe and I have an announcement. Ting, ting, ting...... quiet everyone, joe and I have an announcement. We are now wealthy. Yes, thank you, thank you. Yes, we've come into quite a bit of money."

The OP wonders if her friend might have had too much to drink due to abrupt change in conversation. this doesn't go over everyone's heads. It's just not relevant. OP's very first question is "what to do when friend is very rude?" Just by her original question, SHE discounts that her friend drank too much and calls her rude.

OP is celebrating a death – how else does anyone have money? OP then says they earned it (but gives no amount) and the vitriol goes up another notch. First of all, the OP said we "came into money" You don't "come into money by earning it. If you sold stock, you've always had the stock so you didn't come into it. Same with selling real estate. Getting a new job or bonus? Again - you don't say we "came into some money." That's where my snark came from. I don't believe she earned it because of her words. If you earned the money, you don't "announce it" and you don't "come into it" She had to back=peddle when she was called out on it which is why she changed her story and said she earned it.

Thee is snark because it is DCUM!

OP,

Please use some of your new money, however it came your way if in fact this is/was the big story you were going to tell your friend, to take a basic writing 101 course.

Ditch the friend.

She sounds selfish to me.

OP, DCUMers appear to have no manners and no ability to recognize when proper manners have been violated. Further, I strongly suspect that many posters have probably been guilty of precisely they type of rudeness you describe so they are defensive. Finally, rudeness is a sport, if not an art, on this forum. This is the last place you want to go for insight or support on human behavior. I hope you find a suitable opportunity to share your big news.

OP here. The responses I got from DCUM made me appreciate my friend more. She is 100x nicer than the posters. It was a misunderstanding. it is normal for us to share news of our good fortune. In my culture, it is normal to speak the way I do. There are a lot of euphemisms.

Is it also normal in your culture to talk smack about someone and accuse them of drinking too much and being a falling down drunk?

Regardless of whether or not your friend went about the whole thing in a rude manner, I think it would have been far more rude for you to make an announcement about your own personal financial successes in front of relative strangers.

While it may not have been your ideal plan (you wanted to say it at that dinner, which got altered by visitors), it would have been highly inappropriate IMO to make that announcement in front of people you don't know well.

That, to me, is the crux of this issue, and is why I find it hard to relate to your situation. You should have recognized that it wasn't the right setting for the announcement and waited until it was just you and your good friend.

Not being rude, just how I see it.
Anonymous
Also, if your friend "knew what I meant" regarding the announcement, and it "wasn't a big secret", why did it merit an all-hands-on-deck announcement?

It sounds like you were disappointed that you were unable to share your great news with a stranger, and are trying to rationalize it by blaming your friends for "rudely" singing during your announcement.

OP really doesn't know how to speech English.

I suggest someone come up with a PowerPoint presentation on what happened in that restaurant. It's impossible to get through the narrative.
