I read these posts and try to remind myself that part of my "compensation" is the feeling that my work really matters. (Not that highly paid work can't be important, just that for the type of work *I* do, the "greater good" work tends to be lower paid.) However, as the kids' college costs loom, it becomes harder and harder to ignore the siren call of cold, hard cash. |
My DH is a surgeon. I'm fairly certain the device rep makes the same amount as the surgeon. |
You are too old to post something like this. I could understand if you were 30 and just starting to understand the realities of life, but your ship has sailed past 30, 40, and 50 so you should have picked up some insight by now. |
I think she is probably being sarcastic and light about the whole thing you idiot. |

No granny, she is not. But that is a nice excuse to use when someone calls out your immaturity. Grow up. |

I"m posted earlier and am the lobbyist who works for a nonprofit.
I trained to be a college professor but as a postdoc at NIH I realized that it's a lot of hard work with not a lot of pay-off (grant getting). So, I started doing policy. I feel like I get back what I put in in terms of reward for effort on the job (not the cash). The cash is amazing and I always assume it will go away b/c I do think I"m overpaid yet I"m underpaid compared to some others who do what I do or similar. Anyway, life is about choices and I"m very lucky I found out about this choice in this city when I was 30. |
| oh, me again. I don't want to out myself but I feel really good about the work I do. I design and push for policies that I truly believe will make all of our lives better. |
| 14:41. You have no sense of humor. Get a life. You're a loser. |
Screw you! Who do you think you are telling some they're too old, junior? Work all our lives to send some pompous ass like you to college to earn what we could've had. To hell with you!

Damn right. My son was always asking why we didn't have a top of the line luxury car and European trips like his friends. Grand Canyon just wasn't making it. So I went over to the neighborhood public high school and registered him. I told Mr. Private School Kid that we are now able to go to Europe, and I'm going to the car dealership in the morning to get the Benz of my dream and kick my 5-year old car to the curb. After crying and begging, Mr. Private School (all his life) Kid said he'd rather stay in private school and the Alaska trip sounded great. Fast forward 8 years later. Mr. Private School Kid gave mom a used Benz of her dreams. He never forgot the sacrifice of me staying in my government paying job so he could have more. |
Footnote: Mr. Private School kid graduated with an MBA making more on graduating than it took me years to make. I like my car.

Sniff, sniff. I love you, man. |
If you are CERS you are set. Bless you. Slow and steady. |
