Here's what I want to know: Did you grow up rich? Are most of your friends rich and well-connected? I always wonder how people get successful doing this job and sort of assume it's something only people with the right sort of connections can really make serious money at. Maybe I'm wrong.

I grew up upper-middle class. My friends are everything from blue collar to full-on ballers. I started out working for a woman who ran her own company and had connections to "society" - she'd lived in the city for decades, seemed to know everyone, and was just great about introducing me. When she retired, she let me buy her business for a steal. I was absolutely very, very lucky in terms of being thrust into the homes of the 1%. Plus I genuinely do good work, so they ask me back and refer me to their friends.

Are you really a certified interior designer or are you a decorator? I only ask because I think it's almost easier to make money as a decorator.

Agree. I worked in commercial design for 4+ years in NYC and barely made over $60K even after passing the NCIDQ. Now I work in facilities in DC and make much more, but always think about doing 'decorating' on the side...

What kind of sales?

Corporate advisory services (consulting)

Overpriced nonsense

couldn't agree more. I also go weeks only working 20 hour weeks. Work from home 2-3 days a week. Days I go into the office I leave every day at 4 to be home by 5 to relieve the nanny, and never asked anyone permission to do so. But as long as I hit my goals, no one cares where I am or how I do it.

I like you. I'm in sales too and have a similar schedule. I do NOT make nearly as much.

Can you tell me more about your sales job?

Same here sales, 36yo, have Kellogg MBA. Sell medical devices and have to be on-call when one goes in, gets taken out,etc for liability reasons and if a replacement is needed ASAP.

SAP and other high tech sales to CTOs also pay well, tho sales cycle is 6-18 mos.

Yeah but for those you have to know your stuff, do demos, be a consultatory solution provider. What about just selling low level stuff, any big bucks?

What are you incentivized on?

A long list but primarily patient satisfaction, quality and financial measures. My bonus generally runs around 40-45%.

I wish I had looked into this earlier when I was younger. 55-year old, 30-year RN here. What are the changes that companies like yours would consider me based on my extensive background which includes OR? I remember we had many device reps in the operating room especially ortho.
