Well, we'll see. I haven't seen Biden in private as other PPs have, but simply by watching how each of them react to relatively uncomfortable interviews I can see how Ryan has a command of numbers and a way to articulate the evolution of his proposals (proposals, not record, which is a key distinction in his favor) that can allow him to destroy Biden and by extension compromise the Obama/ Biden ticket.

As noted above I support Obama and think/ hope he'll win, but I think the race is going to be close.

I don't think there's any doubt about it. Biden seems very personable, a great dad and husband, and the kind of guy who would be fun at a party or sitting around watching a ball game with several couples. Tells a great joke but no match for Ryan.

Are you kidding? Biden was first elected to the Senate in 1972, when Ryan was 2 years old. He was reelected SIX TIMES. He's known as the big negotiator who has managed to seal many a bipartisan deal by working with both sides to come to a compromise. He served in Congress for 36 years, many of those on major committees and being one of the most influential senators of the 1990's and 2000's. He's been a long-serving member and former chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, a member and former chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, and has probably forgotten more about US politics and government than Ryan has learned in his 12 years in public office. While he is young and charismatic, I think that Biden's more comprehensive knowledge will give him the edge in debates. This will certainly be a much more balanced VP challenge than Sarah Palin. That was embarassing for anyone not in the Tea Party to watch.

You forgot to mention the fact that Joe Biden got caight plagiarizing a speech and had to drop out as a presidential candidate.

And that Ryan voted for legislation that is responsible for over half the deficit he is supposedly so unhappy about, while passing no bills other than a post office name change and a bow and arrow tax change. And is renowned for introducing a budget that would be a disaster if put into effect.

Biden was already lagging when the speech controversy erupted and he bowed out. Below are the tests of what Kinnock said, and what Biden supposedly plagarized. DCUM, you be the judge.

NEIL KINNOCK at Welsh Labour Party conference May 1987:

"Why am I the first Kinnock in a thousand generations to be able to get to university? Was it because our predecessors were thick? Does anybody really think that they didn't get what we had because they didn't have the talent or the strength or the endurance or the commitment? Of course not. It was because there was no platform upon which they could stand"

JOE BIDEN IN Sept 1987 during his first presidential campaign:

"Why is it that Joe Biden is the first in his family ever to go a university? Why is it that my wife... is the first in her family to ever go to college? Is it because our fathers and mothers were not bright? ...Is it because they didn't work hard? My ancestors who worked in the coal mines of northeast Pennsylvania and would come after 12 hours and play football for four hours? It's because they didn't have a platform on which to stand."

And I think you are out of touch with Florida. My parents are lifelong Republicans who have lived in Florida for 29 years. And they and their friends are all worried about Ryan on the Republican ticket. The number of Floridians who rely on a a lot of butter programs for more than 50% of their basic living needs is huge. Also, the number of Baby Boomers who are about to retire or have just recently retired and moved down to Florida is growing steadily.

I think selecting Ryan essentially gave away Florida. While many seniors and Floridians agree philosophically with the Republican party and ticket, many of them cannot afford to vote Republican now.

We'll see, I guess. If you are right, Romney is toast. I find it hard to believe that this was not something that was exhaustively considered before the Ryan pick, as it is an obvious issue---Romney's not stupid, and unlike McCain he seems to actually want to win---but if picking Ryan costs Romney Florida it is a blunder of epic proportions. I think there is a lot of wishful thinking in the Dem predictions on this point, though. Should be an interesting fall.

Different poster here. The part in bold is why I go with my earlier theory I posted a few pages back. They don't want to win. This whole campaing is a sham, a sop to their base. They can't SHOW their base that they don't want to win, they have to look like they are fighting the good fight. Ryan is WAY too extreme. IVF would become illegal under his bill. Freaking IVF???? This guy is going to scare women and scare old people. Romeny KNOWS that he needs the independents. No way he is going to get them now.

In reality they are throwing the match.

That's delusional. At the time they picked Ryan, Romney was within 1 percentage point of Obama nationally, and within striking distance in enough battleground states to plausibly win. Why on Earth would he throw the election now?

Remember Ryan is smart when you grade on the republican apparatchik curve. Compare to Palin, Buchmann, Newt, etc he is a policy wonk. In the real world, he is way way over his head. His plan is pure fiction and will bankrupt this country. The only way Ryan's plan and Ryan make sense is if you freebase dried unicorn horn.

She has single-handedly renewed our relationship with the world, so I'm very glad she's been at State. As POTUS, I think she would have taken a harder line with Congress in passing economic recovery measures, but I also think the Tea Party would not have been as much a factor, since I firmly believe they're mainly a reaction to the First Black President.

I agree she's been a great SOS. I think she would have been wasted in the WH. She's come out of the 2008 election as the ultimate winner.

A president has a LOT more power and influence than a secretary of state.

If she was really all that, why couldn't she handle the likes of Obama in the Dem primaries?

Also, all Ryan knows is budgets and numbers. Biden will wipe his plate with foreign policy.

Well, I am a Dem and wish I could be as confident as those of you who are predicting an Obama win/landslide, but I have read that the election will be close.
