| The Roosevelts had more class than any of these, even if they started out as shopkeepers at about the same time. |
| Self made old money is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I have nothing but the utmost resepct for someone who came from nothing - where no one helped them acquire anything (!) and their ability to not sit on their laurels, even though they could. Most the people I have seen could not find their way out of a paper bag; and don't understand the ramifications of trying to keep tabs on other people ('s money). Just saying. |
| Agree, self-made money is amazing. The only issue is when they talk about all their self-made money. Then it's either nouveau or bad manners, take your pick. |
| 17:06 again. Sorry, should have said IF, not when, they talk about their new money. I'm sure lots of new money folks don't even talk about it. But really, whether you call it nouveau riche or just bad manners, does anybody enjoy being around someone who talks about their money all the time? |

I think this is what we're talking about here, and what causes people to be labelled nouveau. Not new money per SE. |

Anyone who talks about money has bad manners and is a complete bore, end of label! I am shocked at how many people do ask about money in this locale. How much someone paid for this or that, how much is owed for this or that, where someone got the money for this or that. Point is, if you ask, you are wanna be money. Which is fine in your world, but hell, don't make it so glaringly obvious! I have seen birthday parties where parents (with kids well old enough to be drop off) wander around and nose around someone's house while the parents are *outside* the house hosting! Terrible manners! I think that sort of thing sets people off, and turns people off, understandably. I would never dream of doing that. I would rather be known for better manners, helping the host perhaps. I understand children not being able to restrain themselves, but adults? Really? Yuck! |
It seems the people who don't want to hear it are the guilty ones

| Question: do those in old houses that are remodeled think they are "old money"? Why not just a new house? Maybe this is a different thread? |
