big mistake you are low class. And it shows. This is not California. Do not think that the social norms or California apply here. Most of the old money folks earned their money either in the slave trade or by stealing land from the Indians. Not much to be proud of, but you are talking about a strange society, and everybody has their own games |
| You are old money if you grew up in a house with servants, have impeccable manners and are generally very pleasant. You are new money if you swear, do not walk nicely, dress without style, decorate your home without style, smoke, and get involved in ugly cat fights with neighbors and do not know how to keep your ugly comments to yourself |

7:35 - Nope. Old money is down to earth, which includes but is not limited to, telling it like it is. Old money cares nothing, nothing, nothing about neighbors (the Joneses).
Servants=slaves. New money greatly confuses this, as they equate "nannies" with class climbing. Nannies have nothing to do with class climbing, I have seen people who live in old houses with big payments and yet, nannies! Old money prioritizes their assets, but do not divulge, as badly as so many "nosies" want them to. Why are there so many "nosies" BTW? Have they given up all hope of being even new money? |
| what a ridiculous thread. |
| OP, I cannot believe how self-centered you sound. Do you honestly think you are on anyone's radar?! Do you really think anyone sits around and discusses how you make your money? This is so absurd I think this is a fake post. |
You think having money is more important than having social graces? |

Volvo?
Real old money drives an old Peugeot station wagon. |
| You should try not to care so much about what people think OP. As long as you are nice to folks -- no one will care where you come from. |

OP (and PP) I actually DO think -actually I know and have heard many times for fact - people wonder how others got their money, and some have the b*lls to talk about it, some even have the b*lls to speculate. As if it is their business at all. I have heard it myself. If you are amongst old money, this does not happen; but if you are amongst new money or wanna be money (no money) then it is for certain! Thank you for making the distinction for us. I am with PP that says ignore the craziness (crazies) and stick with people more like you who don't thrive on (low class) drama. Life is too short. Be with people who mind their own and know how to be happy for others. As for those who do not, feel free to speak up - they caused the problem, not you! Don't let the D.C. spin make sense to you - EVER

OP is from California California people are like that |

Old money don't give a flying F about much because they don't need to. Just let it all hang out. Go ahead and talk about money or your crazy uncle, they honestly don't care.
Actually, sometimes it's pretty hard to tell the dif Bren a beach bum and old money. You only find out when some local mentions that the beach bum turns out to own 500 yards of the beach you're on. |
Yes, and in southern CA, people don't often entertain at their homes, and know nothing of thank you notes. |
| 22:13 - YUP. Old money doesn't give a rat's a** because TADAH!!!! *They don't need to!* I know no one else with that luxury, and you would think others have tons and tons of chains on them - they are absolute SLAVES to what others think and also to trying to pick apart others lives. How exhausting that must be! No thanks. I'll hang out with old money, and be GRATEFUL to have them, any day! Old money is a breath of fresh air compared to the sh*t I see and hear in suburbia. |

This thread is still going???
OP, it's about manners. It's bad manners to talk about how much money you have. It's also bad manners to talk about where your money comes from, because you're implying that there's a lot of it. Old money doesn't talk about money because (a) it's bad manners and old money is big on manners, and (b) they're confident enough about their money they don't have to speculate on it. There's a lot of hilarious posing here about OM. Some people know what they're talking about, others have no clue. (And vs. another pp, in the US, old money comes from the Victorian industrial revolution and exploiting the working class, not from slaves or Indians because the southern money didn't survive the civil war and the pilgrims and settlers never had much money.). If you want to try to crack the OM code, be my guest, but don't rely on everything you read in this thread. You seem to get the no tacky house/cherub fountain thing. That plus basic good manners may not lead people to think you're OM, but it should keep people from calling you NM. |
Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Woolworth, etc. are "old money" in the US. |
