OP, many friends of mine realized when they moved here from major cities that how they looked mattered for the first time. Certain people will like you. Certain people will not. Certain people will take your looks to mean "target". If you look young, have long hair, are in shape, dress nice, whatever arbitrary trait the psycho attacker is looking for - this is about YOU not the attacker. We already know the attacker is crazy. Be mindful, do not make eye contact, walk with a purpose, take a community self defense class, don't smile at anyone on the Metro, don't travel alone/in dangerous parts/after dark if you can help it, just don't be their target, period. I have known people held at gunpoint in broad daylight. Trust your instincts. You don't owe anybody anything. Protect yourself. You come first. Be wise. Be careful. This was not your fault.

Are you saying that saying " a lot of crimes/ or most crimes in the area were commited by AA" is a stereotype? It is true! look at the statisitics. it is a fact. I am no racist, but it is true.
Do you ride metro? Who raises hell on the trains most of the time?
And please, believe me, I partly blame the goverment for this. Why? widening socio-economics gap, lack of education, lack of opportunity...all resulting in crime.
