Attended tonight and agree overall folks seemed more pleased. Scenario 2 was overwhelmingly preferred based on the poll they did.

The main 2 issues that seemed to come up were a.) The Crossfield issue in Scenario 1 and b.) The Chantilly folks getting pulled into Westfield and the concerns over dangers of crossing Route 28.

Problem with the Route 28 argument is half of Westfield TODAY has to cross 28.

i don’t think that’s right. crossfield is east of fox mill. if you moved crossfield to skyview they would go past fox mill but they won’t going to SLHS. if you look at a map there is zero reason they should be at oakton. they didn’t want skyview so looks like they’ll get south lakes

Much of Crossfield is in Franklin Farms - beyond Fox Mill on Reston Parkway.

The school is east of Fox Mill. The neighborhoods, with one exception, are west. To go down Reston Parkway towards South Lakes they would pass Fox Mill on the west, but would not go through Fox Mill neighborhoods.
Some of Crossfield neighborhoods are quite close to South Lakes.

Oh, there are plenty that are very close. Folkstone area and those off Reston Parkway between Folkstone and Fox Mill Rd.

I’ve heard McDaniel lives in that area. No wonder he’s been so involved with this boundary change.

Scenario 2 opens Skyview with only 1760 students from within the boundary.

This has been structured to validate Reid’s goal of a hybrid model where hundreds of kids are pupil placing from outside the boundary for the pathways program.

Could mean lots of extra vehicles clogging up the area - at a school that currently doesn’t have a normal-sized parking lot.

And I wonder what they’ll do if this plan so guts Westfield that a lot of Westfield families who remain within the school’s boundaries try to pupil place to Skyview.

Not necessarily. There is a lot of development in that area right around Coates/Floris border (supposed future silver line elementary) that will add a lot of kids in a few years so I think those numbers make sense.

The number of kids provided by new housing may well be more than outweighed by declining student cohorts due to lower birth rates.

No, he does not. He said he grew up in that area and that he knew from personal experience that it is very far to Oakton. He thought people would want to go to a closer high school. He misjudged how racist and classist Crossfield mommas are.

They can pupil place into South Lakes, just like the kids from Herndon do and some from Westfield.

Can someone please explain why so many in crossfield are so laser focused on staying Oakton? I would MUCH prefer my teen having a close option like Skyview rather than the outrageously long commute to Oakton.

Dangers? It's a couple different overpasses depending on the route. I've never thought any were particularly dangerous when traveling over them.

I think it's because they don't like poor brown people. They are posers and they think Oakton is somehow prestigious. Mostly because they are stupid.

They paid oakton price to buy the house in oakton hs. They did not mind the commute to oakton when they bought the house and still do not mind that. For the people who were willing to pay the extra to buy in oakton hs, going to a better school out weighs 10+ minutes of extra commute time. As simple as that.

I actually do not understand why people who hates commute to oakton so much would buy in crossfield in the first place.

It’s so frustrating. I feel almost bullied when I try to advocate for my kid to go to a closer school, and no one has given me a good reason. Makes me think it’s purely a desire to keep upper class

Established school - known quantity vs. school in start-up mode

Larger peer group of high-achieving kids

More electives

Better sports and established extra-curricular activities

Vienna/Oakton considered more tony area than Herndon

If families only cared about proximity, western Great Falls would be begging to move from Langley to Herndon. It doesn’t work that way, at least not for most.

They should be able to pupil place there with no problem.

Pupil placing away from all your friends and neighbors just for the IB program is a big ask.
