How are you this dumb?

Streets have not been plowed, ice is covering them. It's under 20 degrees today tonight will refreeze again. Plows are getting stuck on side streets.

There will be no school maybe Friday.

Being a bit dramatic? By Wednesday things should be fine.

Our school notified a few hours ago of distance learning for Tuesday, and added that distance learning for Wednesday was likely although a definite decision had not been made. I emailed offering my preference for distance learning for Wednesday because our driveway is currently 2 inches of ice accumulated after it was cleared about 5pm on Sunday plus a solid 18-inch snowplow berm at the bottom, and my husband and I are not physically capable of clearing that due to back and knee issues. All of the local kids and professional services are booked up through tomorrow so we are on the list for Wednesday. We will not be able to leave the house Wednesday morning.

I’m sure our situation is not unique.

Seems strange you didn’t have anyone lined up in advance if you are not physically capable and have a kid in school. Sounds unique to me.

Teachers aren’t paid well enough for these services so it does no good for families

We had it cleared late Sunday. I honestly did not expect a solid 2-inch sheet of ice that I couldn’t manage myself, so I didn’t check it early enough in the day today. That’s on me. The folks coming for sure on Wednesday are going to try to get to us Tuesday, but no guarantee. Based on the requests for digging out posted this afternoon on our neighborhood listserve, no, we are not unique.

It’s getting to the main roads that’s the problem and will remain so. I am guessing Thursday with Wednesday being virtual at most schools.

People are not realizing that it's not just the streets; it's the sidewalks, too, for kids who walk. (Believe it or not, a lot do, at least at our kid's school.) Yes, I completely understand that residents are supposed to shovel their sidewalks, but that won't make them magically clear if they haven't, and a lot haven't. You can't just expect kids to walk in the streets as an alternative. (This is why I think the public schools, other than maybe DCPS, are going to be closed all week.) The sidewalk on the main road to our kid's school is now under about 3-4 feet of snow/ice from the snow plow, so there's no way that is getting cleared in the next week given the anticipated cold. Parents/school will get it sorted, but it won't be in the next day or two.

No school today and tomorrow makes perfect sense. No school on Wednesday and even beyond is ridiculous. We have never waited for unshoveled sidewalks or all the snow in every small road in every single neighborhood to melt and clear out before resuming school.

You are going to be mad come Wednesday. Every side street? lol most neighborhoods have not been touched. It’s compact ice.

Do people realize how hard it is to juggle the children at home while working? Sometimes solo parenting?

Why is it dumb? In no other country will schools be closed for a week due to one day of snow. I never missed one day of school due to snow growing up. I live in the northern hemisphere of another country.

We live on a major road downtown (off 14th St) and it has not been plowed yet. In 20+ years in DC, I have never had my street still unplowed the day after a snowfall. It was treacherous to walk the fog this afternoon. And given that the alleys aren’t cleared by the city, I won’t be getting my car out anytime soon! Even if my block got together and hired a plow, there’s nowhere to put the snow on a ten foot wide alley. Ofc I can put my high schooler in an Uber but it’s not so easy for everyone to just clear it and get on the road.
