DD dyed her hair pink and I’m not mad but am concerned

Anonymous
I would not think a 16 yo needs any permission to color hair any color. We grew up in the 80s and went to Hs in the 90s and did all sorts of color with Sun in, bleach, henna and then came the perms. I never remember asking my parents for permission and they didn’t care. It’s just hair.

I have a 15 yo and only care if she asks me for money. Hair can grow out.

Most kids this age I know are stressed about GPA, SAT, ECs, and future college applications etc.

I'm the PP who dyed my hair purple in high school and again, literally 30 minutes. And I was the kid with 5s in 12 different APs and straight As.

If my child did this they would be grounded. If anything OP’s response is tame.

Why? OP said she never expressly forbid it. Child is not psychic and couldn't foresee OP being that worried about it.

Wait help he understand. Grounded why?

Her church friends would disapprove and think she's a bad mom

Close. Her temple friends would disapprove.

+1 LOL. You aren’t pinning this particular overreaction on white people. Not today Satan.

Ha!

OP here. Sorry…what is the implication of this?

This hair color def won’t be the last thing your child does that you don’t approve of.

Prepare yourself.

Every so often I like to read the teen forum, because it reinforces that I'm doing ok with my own teen. OP's cheerful kid dyed their hair pink and mom freaks out. Maybe, just maybe, she knew that you would react like you have, so didn't want to tell you in advance. And it sounds like you haven't actually asked her why she did it? Do you normally not have open communication with her? THAT should be your chief concern, not her hair color.

Lots of the very well-adjusted kids I know dye their hair. It's a form of self-expression. Just my opinion, but I like dyed hair better than piercings or tattoos. I usually complement them on it.

Do you never leave the house? Follow any pop culture? Do you dress like a Mormon wife? Pink hair (or blue, green, rainbow) is not shocking anymore.
It's fun. Unclench JFC you sound so boring

OP this almost seems like a troll post. A teenager dying their hair is concerning to you? What is wrong with you?

+1 This is some type of conservative asian immigrant freakout over 'what will the neighbors think?' and not a normal mainstream reaction to hair dye.

The only valid objection to hair dye is that the chemicals can be harmful, depending on product.

OP sounds like old mother who despised one of our kids haircuts.

It was super annoying. We also shut her down every single time she passed a comment.

NP.

There is an extremely high correlation between people with oddly-dyed hair colors (green, pink, purple), and mental illness.

OP, you are good mom for being concerned and seeking to get your daughter the mental health support she needs.
