Penn is highly diverse. A few public feeder schools in Philly send a large number of URM kids every year. They also get as many private school URM kids as possible. I would not worry about Penn at all. |
+++ my white kid is at an ivy unhooked and enjoys the diversity of all races and backgrounds there, as well as finally having a majority of intellectual matches. her prep school was mostly the same cookie cutter rich suburban white kids. |
because they cannot get in to T10/ivy and they know it |
They also don't want the social environment at schools like Caltech, MIT., UChicago, or Hopkins. Even Princeton and Yale are seen as grinder schools. |
So what do you have to proof to get into this FGLI program? Why was the student in the program??? |
There are lots of highly qualified black kids. But unfortunately the schools went overboard with DEI (I am a left-of-center, anti-Trump Democrat). I socialize and work with upper class black families (think the Martha's Vineyard crowd) and they knew their kids had a lower bar. Some of these kids were superstars who didn't need the lower bar. But others weren't. And this led to people on campus wondering whether the kid was there because they deserved it (as was the case for many) or because of preference.
So many of the Asian students today refuse to assimilate, or try and and fail miserably. Jews were like Asians but made much more of an effort to fit in, and were more successful (there are obviously many exceptions both in terms of Jews who are still not assimilated and Asians who are). I'm not saying that everyone should be 100% a conformist and exactly the same as that would make the world boring. But the stereotype of the super intense, poorly socialized Asian kid didn't come from nowhere. And there are now a lot more of them at elite colleges. |
Assimilation is a racist term. If we have to assimilate, we shall assimilate into Indian tribes starting from the mayflower era. |
Princeton is test optional and you’re just racist. |
The thinking of assimilation today will only lead to division. What are we assimilating into? Deep South Virginia is different from Northeastern WASP/Jew, and is drastically different from West Coast tech immigrant culture. |
Are there any Northeastern WASPs left. |
No it isn’t. It’s not racist to point out that Asian American students come to these schools- make the culture grossly sterile, competitive, and suicide-inducing, and only hang out in all-Asian groups. This means they don’t get the benefits of the liberal arts, only engaging in Asian affairs and Asian-centric education and classroom spaces. It makes the education worse, and they feel entitled to university positions. |
Give me a break. One can very successfully "assimilate" without giving up their heritage. There are countless successful Jewish, black, Asian, etc. people who have done this. But refusing to change at all and staying in your little bubble of social norms and then expecting to be fully accepted is not cool. I spent time living in another country and recognized the need to do this to succeed. And I am a Jew who very clearly and proudly identifies with my heritage but I also know when to turn it on and turn it off. And I am very comfortable with this and do not feel like I am overly compromising or anything. |
As a black, I am offended by this term assimilation. If maga doesn’t like these schools, you can go to your Washington & Lee. |
wow, broad strokes indeed. How about you share with us your generalizations about White Southern redneck culture, black BLM activist culture, and Viva La Raza hispanic student culture? Since you seem to be so knowledgeable about all Asians. The mask is truly off in these anonymous forums. I worry for the American experiment in multiculturalism. |
Exactly. Perhaps this works in Asia, but not here. |
