Same, and we have another round on Monday. This is the part of management I hate. I hate knowing what's coming and having to pretend things are normal with my team members. |
Applause from a laid off econ major. |
What’s your name? I’m going to use every single dollar of my tax refund to vote these @sshole MAGA congress out and I’d love to do it in tribute to you because I’m a generous soul. 😘 |
Hmmm, do you use the interstate highway system? how about meat inspected by the USDA? Or weather from NOAA? Or drugs tested and approved by the FDA? I could go on, but we live in a society where some people use some of the offered services, and others use other services. People who bike don't use highways. People who are vegetarians don't need meat inspectors. See? So you pay for services the Congress approves and the Executive is supposed to administer. It isn't a pay-as-you-go system, it is a government. |
Well said. We are interdependent. |
This whole thread is so dumb. Posters like myself have been warning everyone that we need to curtail AI for years now because it will end up rendering a large percentage of employees obsolete. This is just the beginning. Andrew Yang was warning about this but he was too smart for the middlebrow masses. Now the chickens are coming home to roost.
Microsoft is about to lay off 9,000 employees. It’s not because business is bad. Their stock is almost $500/share now and they’re one of the richest companies in the world. They’re laying people off because of AI. Most people on this board are going to be laid off and need UBI in less than 10 years. The Dems aren’t going to save you. Trump isn’t going to save you. It’s over. |
Solution- more immigration! |
They're laying people off because of greed. Companies have been laying off and using AI to replace them in the past couple years, and already are hiring and moving back to people because AI doesn't work. |
AI is ever evolving and is only going to get exponentially more advanced and capable as years pass. Jobs are going to continue to be lost at a rapid pace no matter what administration is in power because companies have a responsibility to their shareholders, not society at large. And getting your labor cost as close to zero as possible is good for business. And the rub is we are so far gone that even if we ban AI, companies in other countries will allow it and run our companies out of business because they have close to zero labor costs and massive efficiency surpluses because of AI. We are in for a big shock in the next decade and both parties are too beholden to big corporations and big donors to make any changes. We’re screwed. |
Yes I see this in our future as well. Why is it so obvious to some of us but other people just ignore it all? |
I bought groceries tonight. I am VERY much a bargain shopper. I'll gloat when it says at the register I saved $30 when the total I have to pay is $40, even though I know that means I paid what the prices should be. Because I have a lot of basics stocked up all I got was milk, plain yogurt, an onion, a small head of cabbage, couple boxes of store brand shredded wheat on sale, and a few cans of tomatoes and pineapple (fresh pineapple was $5, I think it would yield a bit more than my 2 cans but they added up to just 3.40). But definitely prices have continued to go up, except for eggs. More than $5 for an 8 oz block of kraft cheese. Also this store in the past has had a pretty good produce selection but, for example, the only cabbage they had (besides Napa) was green. No radicchio which they used to always have, not even red cabbage. A lot of other stuff has disappeared. Makes me wonder--high prices and also lack of farm labor??? |
Your view of AI is naive. It's rapidly improving (measured in months, not years). If companies are rehiring, it's because they're still calibrating around the current state of AI (which will be many times better in just a year). AI, plus the rapid pace of robotic innovation, spells doom for the job market. And technology cannot be held back. If the US tried to put the brakes on it, China and others would continue accelerating. Neither party has a solution for what's coming but, of the two, we know that the Republicans will do everything in their power to make sure people suffer. |
Republicans would absolutely love to bring back slavery. They’re dying to pace around with whips. |
They for granted how good we have it. A Day in the Life of Sue Republican Sue gets up at 6 a.m. and fills her coffeepot with water to prepare her morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With her first swallow of coffee, she takes her daily medication. Her medications are safe because some commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of her medications are paid for by her employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Sue gets it too. She prepares her morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Sue’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. In the shower, she reaches for her shampoo. Her bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient because some whiney liberal fought for her right to know what she was putting on her body. Sue dresses, walks outside, and takes a deep breath. The air she breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting the air. She walks to the subway station for her government-subsidized ride to work. It saves her considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, so everyone has the opportunity to be a contributor. Sue begins her work day. She has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays, and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Sue’s employer pays these standards because her employer doesn’t want his employees calling the union. If Sue is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, she’ll get a workers compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think she should lose her home because of her temporary misfortune. It’s noon and Sue needs to make a bank deposit so she can pay some bills. Sue’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Sue’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression. Sue has to pay her Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and her below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Sue and the government would be better off if she was educated and earned more money over her lifetime. Sue arrives home from work. She plans to visit her father this evening at his farm home in the country. She gets in her car for the drive. Her car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. She arrives at her childhood home. Her generation was the third to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. She is happy to see her father, who is now retired. Her father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Sue wouldn’t have to. Sue gets back in her car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Sue enjoys throughout her day. Sue agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m self-made and believe everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.” |
Sometimes I'm glad I am old and maybe will be dead before the worst happens. |
