UVA vs Michigan?

I did a summer half-term on campus as an undergrad. I did three summers in town during grad school.

My kid just finished freshman year and is spending his summer in his college town doing two internships (one paid, one unpaid).

Summer:

I never spent any time in summer at college and neither did 90% of students I knew. I did spend summers in grad school at university bc I did summer terms and worked all year round at school then. But we’re talking about under grad.

Kids are on campus in August/September when muggy weather still sucks.

This is such a stupid thread. People are actually arguing about where it’s hotter in the summer when most students are even around? And then arguing with a straight face that it’s not much colder in Michigan in the winter than Charlottesville? Get a grip folks. Anyone who has spent a decent amount of time in both knows what’s up. Of course it’s considerably colder in Michigan and for longer.

What I find even more funny about this thread is that the OP has been asked more than once why she has to decide today and isn’t answering. Did she get off the waitlist of one or the other? What is going on? This is a troll bullshit post designed yet again to start a Michigan versus Virginia fight and it’s really petty.

I attended UVA from Maryland and was close with people who attended Michigan. I know plenty of students at both schools today, as well. My kid is interested in both.

Here are some of the differences that you should consider:

Size: Michigan is more than twice the size of UVA. The feel is different because of that. Same with Charlottesville and Ann Arbor—both are great college towns, but AA is more than twice the size. UVA and Charlottesville feel a little more intimate, slower than Michigan/AA, which are more bustling. What does your kid want?

Distance from home: I liked being within a drive of home at UVA. Does your kid want that easier access to home?

Weather: I’m with people who say this is significant and comes down to personal preference. My own kid, who really likes Michigan, does not like long cold winters, so that’s something he’s factoring in to his preferences. (My other kid prefers cold weather and did not consider warm weather schools, so this really is a personal preference thing!)

Culture: UVA does feel Southern. When I was there, the joke was that it was the farthest South people from the North would go, and the farthest North people from the South would go. While the overall student population is not conservative—there are so many kids from NoVA!—there is definitely a subset of moneyed Southern types that you won’t find at Michigan.

Here are some things I don’t think are that different/meaningful in your decision:

Social life: both schools have significant and very active Greek life, but both schools are also big enough that no one needs to join a Greek org to have a great social life.

Sports: I know people will disagree with me on this one, but both schools have big D1 sports programs, with football as a major social/campus life activity. Yes, Michigan’s football program is better, and, yes, their stadium is massive and a particular experience. But if your kid likes sports and wants the rah-rah experience, he can get that at either school.

Post-college career outcomes: These are both excellent schools with strong alumni networks. Your kid will do well with a degree form either one.

Good luck with your decision!

NP. Just a guess, Michigan had a wave of waitlist acceptances last week, for which today is the deadline to enroll.

Around a 1,000 students get off the waitlist at Michigan so could be.

I never bring it up until someone starts bringing it up. And there are lots of them.

I was born in California, learned to ski there, and am tired of hearing people describe schools north of Maryland like they are unlivable tundra.

Bottom line, if you want great weather, go to Florida, California, and maybe Arizona.

DP. The most recent one published waitlist stat was 983, though obviously every year is different.

Right. For kids where sunny, warm weather is an issue, they are picking the states you mentioned.

Nobody is arguing that. But it’s one thing to say who cares about weather and another thing to argue that it’s no colder in Michigan than Charlottesville. That’s total bullshit.

Nobody said that.

People have just expressed their preferences. Some people prefer Michigan weather over Virginia. That's all.
