College and University Discussion

Which has general better quality of life, social life and name brand?
Major undecided but not engineering. OOS for both. Thx! Deciding by tomorrow. |
|
Op again.. what I'm asking is which would you choose based on overall college experience.
Does either one even stand out? |
|
If in-state, then go with UVA.
Otherwise it is mostly a size choice. U of MI is much larger than UVA. Go with best fit for DC. Either would be fine for most students. |
|
UVA by a small margin if both are OOS and non-engineering.
size is favorable, and uva has overall better student quality. |
| Michigan by a decent margin if both are OOS. Academically it’s an overall better school and carries a stronger prestige at the national and international level. |
|
UVA. Michigan is a giant university full of lower performing students. Whether you like it or not, in state students are not nearly the quality of others. UVA has no such issue.
Plus budge wise, Michigan leaned in very heavily on DEI, left of center research, etc. so it is getting brutally hammered in research grant cuts from NIH, DHHS, NSF, DOE, etc. Going foward all that money it relied on for soft research is going to be gone. That's why the former President only lasted a year before he said "see ya!" |
| Michigan is more prestigious by a decent margin (this is borne out in the parchment stats). |
| This again?!? It’s so kid-specific. Crowd sourcing won’t help. If in-state, obviously UVA is cheaper, but some kids want to experience life outside VA. Michigan has slightly higher prestige, but colder weather. School spirit and alumni network go to Michigan. But, if you want a smaller school close to home, UVA makes more sense. Do you like orange or maize? |
|
Ann Arbor>Charlottesville
This is subjective and some kids would be overwhelmed. But, if you want the best college town in America, look to A2. |
|
UVA's SAT's are higher.
SAT's are the best predictor of one's academic performance. UVA has better academic students. Facts. |
I'm the OP and this my first post about these schools. I tried searching on here but didn't come up with a direct comparison. |
| The main difference may be weather. Which one did your student prefer when they visited? Choose that one. |
| Nither |

I worked with some Michigan grads and am not impressed.
It's a big school, like a factory. |
