UVA vs Michigan?

Plus budge wise, Michigan leaned in very heavily on DEI, left of center research, etc. so it is getting brutally hammered in research grant cuts from NIH, DHHS, NSF, DOE, etc. Going foward all that money it relied on for soft research is going to be gone.

That's why the former President only lasted a year before he said "see ya!"

I think this is the difference, in that at UVA you get white, mostly-southern conservative families who are prepped out. They seem to stick around Charlottesville post-grad or retire there. They seem to have a chip on their shoulder, especially when compared to UM.

Our kid loved UM and you can ignore the snide remark from pp about low-performing students. It’s competitive. Kids have to study and hustle. There are tons of OOS from north of DC, tons of wealthy New England kids. Most kids leave AA for New York and Chicago, and some DC and Philly. I don’t know a single one south of Charlotte.

If your DC likes football go to UM. If your kid likes milder weather and a smaller environment go to UVA.

Had family at each. Would agree on Michigan.

How is the quality of life or student experience at both? My kid is learning UVA due to size.

My family had girls at each. If you don’t get into one of 3 sororities at UVA you can end up feeling pretty excluded. Nothing beats football season at U of M… best time ever.

Academics are equal in my opinion.

Does either one even stand out?

Michigan hands down. Better town, better variety, better culture, better sports and a better engineering program. Charlottesville is like a country club and more homogenous.

I’ve attended both. Michigan has much more to offer. Charlottesville is nice, but feels small after 2 years. It’s very Greek and preppy.

Michigan has everything you could ever want. School spirit is off the charts. Some many types of people you can find your tribe. Strong academics in nearly all specialties - business, engineering. Very strong reputation and alumni network.

Another vote for UMich. There is a tribe for everyone, not Greek heavily, thought of more highly from a global perspective, and tops in many subject areas - Ross> Darden, UMich engineering > UVA Engineering.

But can you get into Ross or engineering if you don't arrive as a freshman in these majors?
I don't think so (?)

Can someone clarify?

SAT's are the best predictor of one's academic performance.

UVA has better academic students.

Facts.

The % of a-holes is higher at UVA.

When I had this choice, I chose UVA. Both are great, and they will probably be happy at both. Both have larger in state than out of state populations, so either you will be with a lot of people from metro VA (suburban DC) or metro MI (suburban Detroit and to a lesser extent Grand Rapids). These are relatively different populations. Tipping the scales was that the MI academic calendar ends in April, so you get a tiny bit of ok-to-be-outside weather when you first start in the fall, then basically winter for the rest of your time there each year.

When I visited Ann Arbor in December it was flat and cold. I like UVA much better for weather and nearby mountains.

OP: OOS for both, not engineering

Half of these comments: Would choose UVA if in-state, Michigan better for engineering though!
