OP here. yes, it's funny.

Again, We are OOS (Maryland).

Kid is male, preppy, wants Greek life.
Protestant and is interested in Christian community groups on campus too but is politically liberal and currently has close friends of all faiths and none.

PS, the weather's not really that different. I will grant it's different from California by a lot. But DMV is even more humid in summer, also has grey winters, and gets snow too. You only need a ski parka or warm puffer and one pair of waterproof boots. We get a lot of blue sky cold temp "sweater weather" here. That's my favorite kind of weather (cool, sunny fall and spring days). I also would pick Michigan weather over VA weather.

Michigan winters are massively different than VA winters. Many years we get barely any snow at all.

I think OP is in MoCo. I have 9 years of experience living in MoCo.

The insulated coat I bought for a trip to Russia in the winter is the same one I used for the coldest weather in MoCo, and I also used it at Michigan and for skiing in the NorthEast. It was generally suitable for any winter weather in the 30s or below.

Southeast Michigan is very similar to other parts of the Mid-Atlantic and New York. Would you buy a different coat to go to New York for a rainy weekend? There's no need for so much weather-related angst. Millions of people live in areas with this kind of weather.

Ann Arbor averages 60 inches of snow a year. Charlottesville averages 17. Charlottesville’s daily average high temperature is 12 degrees higher in December-February, 10 degrees higher in March in November, and 8 degrees higher in April. They are not the same. It’s worth weighing these things.

No one prefers Michigan weather over Virginia weather.

I do. VA is a swampy s-hole.

Had family at each. Would agree on Michigan.

How is the quality of life or student experience at both? My kid is learning UVA due to size.

UVA by a mile. Your kid won’t regret it.

SAT's are the best predictor of one's academic performance.

UVA has better academic students.

Facts.

The % of a-holes is higher at UVA.

Facts.

Give it a rest already. You are spitting out garbage.

Lol the weather averages in the summer between Charlottesville and Ann Arbor are within a few degrees of one another.

OP, did you reach a decision? Have you considered a second deposit and revisiting both?

This makes me lean UVA if ok with Southern culture and Southern flavor of Christianity.

Chance of Muggy Conditions in the Summer

The percentage of time that is muggy, oppressive, or miserable (i.e., a dew point greater than 65°F).

VA is swampy s-hole.

Wow good thing college students regularly spend so much time on campus between June and August.

Summer:

I did a summer half-term on campus as an undergrad. I did three summers in town during grad school.

My kid just finished freshman year and is spending his summer in his college town doing two internships (one paid, one unpaid).

Summer:

I never spent any time in summer at college and neither did 90% of students I knew. I did spend summers in grad school at university bc I did summer terms and worked all year round at school then. But we’re talking about under grad.

People wear the same coat for about 10 degrees of difference. Classes are indoors. Walks between buildings are usually pretty short and there are both a city bus system and a campus bus system.

There are about 2,000 California undergrads at Michigan. In my experience at grad school, Californians adapt after their first year. It's mainly about getting the right clothes to suit your personal comfort. A lot of guys I know think 60 degrees is shorts weather.

I personally like the weather better in Michigan. I don’t like muggy weather in August/fall (when kids are in school) and I prefer snow over freezing rain.
