What happened to Moderate Dems VA/MD?

This is my experience, too. And the few times I’ve tried to speak more moderately (not MAGA), I’ve been called names and told I’m ignorant. And when I’ve calmly explained I voted for Harris but have concerns, I’ve been told I am lying and I must be a Trumper.

I find some of my progressive friends openly hostile. I can’t have reasoned conversations with them.

Oh no. Poor bigots don’t like to be called out for their bigotry.

And this is how the democrats lose elections. Moderates have been pushed out of the party.

To say this when the primary was cleared for Spanberger is ridiculous.

Perfect example here. What did I say that was bigoted?

But you did illustrate my point. It’s difficult to have a conversation if you’re immediately met with assumptions and unearned insults. And this, unfortunately, seems to happen almost every time I talk to a progressive coworker or friend.

What names were you called when you shared your views?

It always starts with MAGA, which I’ve learned means “any view I don’t agree with.” Or I’m called ignorant or stupid.

I haven’t gotten racist or bigot. Well, until now. I was just informed I’m a bigot now.

Because if you agree with any Trump policies you clearly are even if you're hiding behind "economic concerns" which of course he's also horrible at. I honestly can't believe any truly educated person believing a single word out of his mouth.

And here’s another one. I’ve said nothing about my beliefs and I haven’t said ANYTHING about agreeing with Trump’s policies, yet posters are questioning my intelligence. All I’ve done is identify myself as a moderate who wants a reasoned conversation.

Multiple posters have now illustrated why it can’t happen.

Because we’ve had countless threads like this. And, without fail, the OP is either a lying sack of sht troll and/or when you drill down on issues is actually MAGA.

Dp. Again, all you’re doing is driving people away. I voted D for decades. My parents were immigrants who didn’t go to high school. Dad had a blue collar job and thanks to the union we had healthcare and a nice small house in a good school district. I’m the embodiment of the American dream, having gone to an Ivy League school and been relatively successful and none have a family of my own.

Democrats have abandoned people like my family, legal immigrants with traditional values. I’m done. The disrespect and disdain for anyone who disagrees with the extreme edges of the party drives people away. This thread is just one example of it.

I agree. I feel pushed away by the Democratic Party, too. I have very progressive relatives (close-in MD). I don’t even have to disagree; if I simply ask the wrong question, dinner becomes combative and uncomfortable.

It is absolutely doing damage to the Democrats. If shutting down conversation is the go-to method of operating, I’m not interested in participating.

He never could have been elected Governor of MD - a strongly Democrat state - had he not been more moderate (and preferable to many registered Democrat voters) than the Democrat he ran against.

I also would be fine with Susan Collins if I lived in Maine. She is highly bi-partisan in her voting record and often she is the key vote in favor of a Democrat's initiative. And again, she very clearly is not MAGA.

Susan Collins is a wimp.

I hear Hogan is going to run for governor again.

I would vote for Larry Hogan a hundred times. It’s unfortunate that someone like him will never make it out of a presidential primary because if he did he would be hard to beat. But because of the extreme wings of both parties we are left to choose between morons.

Nope. That was it. That was all I said to cause a combative table.

You fail to realize how openly aggressive some of your progressive counterparts are. And until the Democratic Party is able to acknowledge this, you’ll continue to push away moderate voters.

I also work in a very conservative organization. I suspect I disagree with all of my coworkers’ opinions. Yet I find them easier to talk to about politics than my progressive relatives.

I can give you the context. Generally, restorative practice was being explained to an older family member. I asked that question, and then I was told the victim has a responsibility to help the offender learn. I reiterated that may revictimize the victim and then the “lecture” began.

But you proved my point again. You insulted me after making your own convenient assumptions. It’s the default, I’ve noticed, when talking to some progressives.

Please explain these “traditional values” that you don’t think are compatible with the DNC platform.

If you get a student loan, you agree to the terms, and you pay it off.

Restorative Justice is awful and doesn't work in most instances.

Getting rid of SROs, and then having to bring them back as "Community Engagement Officers" is just a way to save face because progressives know that getting rid of SROs was a bad call.

Raising taxes in a time when people are losing jobs rather than tightening the belt is a disaster for this area.

Caring more about illegal immigrants over Americans who are struggling and homeless is a slap in the face for Americans.

That said, I'm supportive of putting a cap on executive pay in comparison to the average wage worker. Or, raise taxes for the very highest of income earners. The income gap is going to fracture our society. This is why so many billionaires wrote an open letter to world leaders to tax them more. They know such a gap is not sustainable. The French learned that lesson the hard way.

I also support a living wage. I don't care about lgbtq books in the classrooms. But, I don't support trans using the bathroom of their desired gender.

If you want to attract high paying jobs here you need to make the environment a bit more business friendly.

IMO, progressives focus on the wrong things. Their hearts are in the right place, but the reality is that we don't live in Kumbaya land, and their policies won't work, just as pure capitalism doesn't work.

Example of a “wrong question”?

Sure. Recently, during a conversation about restorative justice in schools:
“But does this have the potential to make the victim feel uncomfortable?”

New poster. 100%. Restorative Justice is not evidenced based in the least. It certainly does not improve school safety. But to bring this up makes you racist.

You cannot question the party. Vote blue no matter who. The party picks a candidate and you vote for the candidate.

Clearly you said more than that to turn a conversation combative or get called MAGA.

DP and yeah. I bet there is context here you are conveniently leaving out. But whatever. Let b1tchy people "force" you to vote for the real extremists because you're a big baby.

Someone had the nerve to disagree with me so I am voting for Nazis!

People like this are just far right maga adjacent, anyway. The democrats need to build a party without these nutty milquetoast moderates.
