Metropolitan DC Local Politics
Exactly. The educated, moderate Rs I know from the 90s are all Ds now. |
I think they may vote D because this area is controlled by Ds so they want a say in who gets elected, but IMO, moderate Rs are probably Independents. -former R, moderate, who is now Independent but registered as a D so I can have a say in the primaries. |
This is me. Can we please just get a normal person in office who isn't a scumbag that hates immigrants and women, doesn't wear identity politics on their sleeves and isn't trying to destroy capitalism or the so-called "wealthy" (aka dual income earners). |
I like to think that there are more people like us, moderates, but it seems like extremes are winning elections in most of the cities. I think it's because people who are extremists are more passionate, so they are more active in elections, especially local ones, and putting up politicians to run for office. They are the ones winning the primaries because not enough moderates vote in the primaries. I really can't otherwise get my head around why we have so many extreme politicians today. so, if you live the DC area, and are a R, you need to register as a D so that you have a say in who wins the primary in the local elections. Otherwise, your vote is a throw away vote, and we will keep getting progressive politicians in office. |

The thing is, in reality, there are so few extreme left politicians on the left. It's just that right has gone soooooo right anything the other way starts to look extreme.
Certainly, there is no preponderance of extreme organized, far ideology on the left as there is in MAGA and the Republican party as a whole. |
To moderates, progressives are "extreme left". It doesn't matter if the right is more extreme. Moderates don't want either extremes. |
This made me lol. You are delusional. The far left has as many and is as extreme as the far right. Each side grows proportionately to the conflicting extremism. Basically, extremism breeds more extremism. On both sides. It will only get worse. |
In 2025, my former R friends vote D in pretty much all elections. I'm sure if some old timey R came around they might consider them. Weld was the last R that garnered any support from this group. But for now they are solidly D. A few have always been very politically open and active - clubs, protests, canvassing, etc. - for whatever candidate/issue they support. Most recently, Ds. Not all states require you to register FYI. |
You don't need to register with a party in VA. |
False equivalency. The GOP is entirely extreme right now, at least in actions. You can't "both sides" this. |
This analysis is badly missing a "power" lens. Yes, there exist extreme leftists and extreme right wingers, but the extreme leftists very rarely hold state or national office. That's why you always get this analysis that looks like "An Oberlin sophomore said bahn mi is cultural appropriation" being presented alongside "President of the United States Donald J Trump (GOP) repeated white supremacist talking points today from the Oval Office, claiming that Haitians eat dogs." |
So....just about every D candidate.

From my perspective, both parties are unhinged and both have become too extreme.
If either one would nominate a moderate who will sidestep/avoid the whole culture war mess, I would quickly vote for that candidate. |
Ask a Democrat to explain what a woman is. |
Progressives have taken over moco. To a moderate, a progressive is on the extreme side. They may not be as extreme as maga but they are not moderate. People like op, me *former R), my spouse (dem) are looking for moderates. I lol'd at the balm mi quip. |
