It appears to be true since Bethesda Magazine attributed that information to a B-CC assistant principal: https://bethesdamagazine.com/2025/02/25/bethesda-chevy-chase-high-lockdown-report-weapon/

Sounds like it. |
Not always but it does help. My kids are all at JR and I love that they have metal detectors. Why? Because, I don't have to worry about the kids sneaking in a gun. And because they have them - there is more security present at the doors and while things are far from perfect - it does help. We have had one lockdown in the 8 years my kids have gone there - due to a shooting outside on the streets between non-students. Privacy? They are kids. At school to learn and feel safe. Plus, you'll never have to buy boots for your kids again because all they will want is sneakers that don''t set off the metal detectors. |
Theater? You think this is theater? On what planet do you live on? If a shooter comes into the school with intent to kill, metal detectors provide an early warning system and can save lives. The presence of metal detectors dissuades kids from bringing weapons just to show off or intimidate other kids. No, they don't protect from all threats, but they protect from the most FATAL threats. This is NOT an invasion of privacy. You don't even need to open your bag. You walk through, just like in the airport. You can't ever put "privacy" over saving lives, PP. You're so wrong headed. Bet you voted for Trump. I went to an international private high school in Paris at time of heightened terrorist activity: we had steel barricades at every school entrance and police patrolling the block. There were no metal detectors at the time, so our bags were OPENED and SEARCHED during periods of maximum risk. I believe they have now installed metal detectors. No one complained. You do what you have to do to save lives. |

It was an air soft gun. |
Are you sure? That post was deleted so maybe police got it wrong? |
Yes, I’m certain. |
They even posted a picture of the airsoft gun. I wonder why they deleted it. |
| Unfortunately, metal detectors do not catch 3D printed ghost guns. They are also only effective if personnel are trained properly, personnel are in place, and machines are maintained. Anyone want to place a bet on how well that would go in MCPS? And meanwhile, there’s a false case sense of security and administrators are able to push off other real changes just “because we have metal detectors”. And if the detectors miss weapons going in, kids just learn it’s fake. It really would concern me to have these put in place as the solution to the problem, without a solid plan to ensure they are being used correctly. |
Yes, I mentioned the 3d printed guns upthread as a loophole. But still. We need the metal detectors, period. There are actually very few all plastic guns in circulation compared to ones with metal parts. Metal detectors will also detect knives. Just because you think the plan won't be implement properly, doesn't mean you need to cancel it altogether. That's cutting off your nose to spite your face. |
I think metal detectors should absolutely be among options that should be considered. I am only noting that it’s not a perfect solution and needs resources and attention to be done right. Maybe we can get MCPS to do it right. But just to set up meta detectors takes the administration off the hook to make actual real changes and then actually do it. (Remember the lanyards that students are supposed to wear in school and basically just show at the door and stuff in their bags? And those are lanyards, easy). |
They think by writing students are in a secure locations or are safe, they are making families feel better. But as in your case, it doesn't. What if a student was in a bathroom? |
What are they doing to do now? Lock bathrooms? |
|
They need a zero tolerance policy for violent incidents and weapons in school. A new PTSA leader. A closed campus. And more security officers in the school.
It’s just a matter of time before kids die. - mother of 3 BCC grads |
The school will never tell you. Unless a reporter reports it. And won’t tell you if the kid is back at school either. |
