Tell me you wash or dry clean your winter coats… I didn’t realize some people do not wash coats from year to year

Are you stupid? What about dirt and grime from walking around?

Coats are mostly clean and can be spot cleaned. Putting them in the washer and dryer will cause more pilling and damage to your coats. Again, a coat is not clothing worn on your skin like a hat or gloves or socks

I don’t wash my coats but I use a steamer on my coats and wool sweaters.

I wash hoodies after 2-3 wears.
Winter coats I wash twice a year unless they’re obviously dirty.

Riding the subway in the winter in NYC, there is so much odor coming from people's disgustingly dirty coats....

That smell is not the coats…

OP, you will love this. My family never once washed our family sleeping bags we used yearly for camping (like for 10-12 years at least- and I'm sure they still own them and still have not washed them). EVER.

Every year someone would get dad's BO one and complain (the smell was instantly identifiable) and it would be traded back to him for his use. Sure we were kids swimming in the ocean every day, but it's still gross. When I would complain my mother would say that they would fall apart if they were washed (not sure why she thought that- sure it could happen but I always begged her to try it with Dad's).

Coats get washed if they are visibly or olfactorily dirty. Sometimes multiple times in a year, sometimes not in a year if only used a couple times.

Gross, I was all sleeping bags and really everything we take with us camping or traveling. Wash swim suits in washer in mesh bag and hang after each use.

It’s the coats. You know how you can smell sheets that haven’t been washed. That sweaty bed smell some bedrooms have as well.

That's more discusting then not washing your coat. Covering the funk in perfume spray? Yuck.

Ha! In fairness to your mom, washing our old sleeping bags in the early 90’s was such a PITA. I have memories of being stuck in laundromats all across the land when they would get wet from our leaky tent, waiting hours for them to tumble dry.

I just did a load of winter jackets (down and otherwise) before the recent cold. For me, that’s probably good enough for the season, but I might wash one more time before spring. My DD, when she was young, could manage to get hers dirty pretty frequently so I washed it at least once a month.

I haven’t worn my wool coat since I started WFH, but used to dry clean it once a year when I was commuting to work in it.

I dry clean them at the end of winter or usually earlier but before I put them away for the season. It's mostly because I am petite and struggle to find good quality winter coats. The dirt is usually from getting in and out of the car or slush or cleaning off windshields from a car.

It's really gross to see people walking around with dirty winter coats - especially those who have cream or white ones and you can just see the grime (on the sleeves, especially). Just b/c your coat is black, and you can't see the dirt, doesn't mean it's not there. Yes, wash your coat regularly.

I am horrified by the number of people who are horrified that people wash their winter coats. It has nothing to do with sweat! Do you ever eat at a restaurant? All those odors are now in your coat.

We ate out a few times this week, and I can smell the “restaurant smell” (as I call it) on my coat. It’s getting washed this weekend. I didn’t have time to do it during the week and I’ve been so self conscious when I’ve gone into stores, because I know it smells.
