Boy Scouts and Homosexual Discrimmination and my son.

Really? How so? Can a white person enter a Miss Black USA contest? Can a girl attend an all boys school and vice versa? There are MANY types of discrimination--we ALL experience at some point in our lives. Some forms affect us more than others but you can't change the way a person feels or what the underlying principle is for certain organizations.

It may be legal - but that won't last long. FINALLY we'll be getting a generation of leaders who believe gays should be afforded the rights all of us straight people have.

I do not support the Boy Scouts. I do not support the KKK. If they choose to operate, then so be it. But I think they are ignorant uneducated and full of hate.

I feel discriminated against when:

I have to wait in the regular check out line when I have 11 items instead of 10.
When I am not allowed to use the men's room, or the bathroom in first class.
I am not invited to some parties.
I have to muddle through instructuion sheets trying to find the English version.
i am ingnored in more expensive stores.
I am not allowed entry into an exclusive nightclub.
etc. etc. etc.

Discrimination is out there and everyone gets a taste of it at some point. It is trying to accomodate the needs of one group at the expense of another. Sometimes it has to be like that.

Question. . .you say "sometimes it has to be like that." If you couldn't marry the person you love, vote, or own property, does it "sometimes have to be that way." Would that be okay with you because everyone gets a taste of it at some point? I am not trying to be flippant or a jerk. Simply trying to reveal how this logic supported LOTS of practices that we find abhorant now. Unfortunately, some of these discriminatory practices are still in place.

We must really look out for one another people, and be advocates for those who need it if they can't advocate for themselves because they aren't allowed in.

Please pay attention to my previous post and stick to the topic of alternatives to the BSA. If you want to discuss the wider issue of discrimination, start another thread.

Ok, just to give some perspective on the evil Boy Scouts... My Brother In Law is gay. We love him. My 13 year old was a boy scout. Started off as a weebalo (sp?), lion, cub, boy scout... Went to camps. Wore his uniform to school - Canterbury Woods in Annandale. They raised the flag, assisted with morning duties, had special responsibilities, collected food for the poor from people in the neighborhood, ect. The meetings were constructive and did not consist of gay bashing or praying for hours on end. In fact they never once discussed being gay or being straight for that matter. He enjoyed the activities and learned so many skills that I could never have taught him. You are going to experience discrimination everywhere be it open or hidden. You can easily join another group with no known anti-gay rules and find out the people are truly anti-gay and open about it. Just because the by-laws, which were written by some ancient dinosaurs state the group is anti-gay and loves Jesus 24/7 does not mean the particular group you join is going to shove it in your son's face.

Notable Eagle Scouts include:

President Gearld Ford

Gerald Ford was one of the weaker Presidents. If this is the best the Eagle Scouts can do, I am definitely sending my son to Campfire kids. Or the Harley Davidson club.

Your point? No organization is perfect. Character is learned/formed in many places. Not just the Scouts.

Well. All I know is that someone taught Pol Pot how to tie knots, and it sure as hell wasn't the Sorbonne.

Thanks for all the entertainment. Mostly, thanks for the lists of alternatives. I like the skills that are learned in the BSA, but don't like their policies, and it is good to know there are alternatives.
