Is that really, truly what you took away from the posts that do not approve of the policy of the Boy Scouts as an institution? That we are all therefore condemning as a bigot every young person who is a member but who likely is not even aware of the policy? Seriously, you are not able to think in more refined terms than that? Or are you simply baiting people? |

I think she's baiting people.
I was a Girl Scout. To the PP who asked: Our local overnight campouts were chaperoned by fathers from the troop. |
| Too bad. I enjoyed Girl Scouts so much but was always more envious of Boy Scouts for all their outdoor activities. Always imagined my son would be in Scouting. Not anymore. |
| I was a Girl Scout, male chaperone inappropriately touched two girls in my troop (one of whom was his own daughter) on a camp out. I was the official tattle scout and it was not an easy time from there. Anything can happen, usually nothing does. If you don't want to join, then don't. Sounds like there are many options out there that have a lot to offer boys and girls. Seems to me that anyone I might trust my children to spend unsupervised time with, over night or otherwise, (friends, family, or trusted "leader") should fall into the category of My Responsibility to know them, to be as certain of them as trustworthy as I can, and to not rely on rules and regulations to do the hard work for me. I support the Boy Scout protocol. |
| So now being a different color is the same as being gay? |
Black people have certain things aimed JUST FOR BLACK PEOPLE. BET? Black Miss America? the list goes on..... Two wrongs do not make a right. Black people exclude white people from pagents, groups, all the time. Whats the difference? |
In my opinion, just as you have no choice whether you are born black or white, you have no choice whether you are born gay or straight. So yes, they are the same to me. It is not a choice in my book. |
But plent of people will disagree with you regarding being born Gay. Until that is proven, the world is going to have a harder time with this one. Clearly they arent the same in America's eyes since Gays dont have the same rights as straights or african americans. |
|
Last I checked, Gays couldnt get married but Black people can.....You can try to compare the two all you want but Its really not the "same".
This coming from a lesbian. |
What I should have said is that discriminating against someone on the basis on skin color is the SAME as discriminating against someone on the basis of sexual orientation. My point is that being gay is not a life style choice. |
| that was coming from a lesbian as well |
Blah, blah, blah. What a bunch of useless rhetoric. |

For a number of reasons I find it problematic to compare bigotry against gays to bigotry against blacks because of the argument over whether being gay is a choice. (which I find irrelevant)
How about this as an example? Suppose we lived in an massively atheist society where Christians were a small minority. Suppose the Boy Scouts of America, the main youth organization for boys, were an atheist organization and didn't allow Christians to join (instead of the other way around -- atheists are barred). Isn't being a Christian a choice? Couldn't you choose not to be a Christian so you could join? If I were an atheist member of the BSA, I might say, "I don't have a problem with you and your religion. I just don't want you around my child because you might pollute him with your awful belief in a supernatural being. Decide not to be a Christian and you can join." Hmm-mmmm...that would be fair....NOT! |
This example did not illuminate why you find it problematic to compare bigotry against gays to bigotry against blacks. Your argument is based on one's religion, which is a choice. I was raised (or "born") one faith, but chose another. I was born white, but I can't choose to convert to being black. Just as I can't chose to become a lesbian. I can admire them. I can perform lesbian sex. But in my heart, I know that I will always be straight. Just as many lesbians know they will always be gay. |

Of course, pp, (17:15 here) I don't disagree with you about your experience. But since some people dismiss bigotry against gays because they believe gays can choose who they are, I think it's important to pick an example that does indicate choice. There are always people who will say that Blacks can't choose to be white but gays can choose to be straight. So that's why I use an identity like "Christian" which is in reality a choice but doesn't feel like it to some people. Or sometimes I use interracial marriage -- theoretically one could always choose to love someone else.
And for the record, I do know people who thought they were always going to be on one "team" and then changed to the other "team." Not a lot of people are like that but they're out there. Basically I think people should be on whichever team they damn please whenever they please as long as they are consenting adults and treat each other with mutual respect. |
