| I don't think Boy Scouts carries any of the clout with admissions that it did generations ago....only in the minds of those who are into it. |

Okay, so following this logic, let's say that my daughter who is black wants to join the Girl Scouts. All of her friends are Brownies. But they are a private group, and as such, believe that she is not "morally straight" because she is black. She cannot therefore be a brownie. Should my white friends just stand by and let this happen because this is America, and therefore if people have a problem with my daughter they can choose to exclude her? Curious. Black people have certain things aimed JUST FOR BLACK PEOPLE. BET? Black Miss America? the list goes on..... Two wrongs do not make a right. Black people exclude white people from pagents, groups, all the time. Whats the difference? This is an EXCELLENT point. Why is it ok to have certain groups and events that specifically cater to black people? is it racism or is it just a group of people with similarities getting together? There are Latino specific groups, gay clubs, country clubs for the rich, etc. that cater to a certain type of people. Most people don't find an issue with this, unless it is perceived as a white person only group. then, it is racist. Why is that? I think the only reason people are getting worked up over the BSA policy is because it is excluding them. They have every right to allow anyone they want to join. Just as I could never walk down the runway vying for the Miss Black America title, or I will never be allowed entry into a country club...that is the way it is. And...I remember an old post where someone inqured about a Black playgroup and everyone went apeshit over that. But now you see all sorts of requests for heritage related groups. What is wrong with that? One even went so far to say that anyone can attend, not just blacks. very nice, but I wouldn't go. It is obvious the group was established to allow black parents and their kids to get to hang out with their race. Why would I want to interfere? There are so many things i can do I would never focus on what I can't do. It's a free country. |
The thread is hysterical. My personal fav here is the woman who says she is not a lesbian but can perform lesbian sex - in solidarity I presume. |

The Boy Scouts OPENLY DISCRIMINATE. It is wrong to discriminate. End of story.
It may be legal - but that won't last long. FINALLY we'll be getting a generation of leaders who believe gays should be afforded the rights all of us straight people have. I do not support the Boy Scouts. I do not support the KKK. If they choose to operate, then so be it. But I think they are ignorant uneducated and full of hate. |

I think that comparing the Boy Scouts and KKK might be exaggerating JUST a little???
Too funny! |

Um, what? Are you referring to boy scouts? The KKK? The posters on this thread? There are a lot of options here for this very odd post... |
This is an interesting discussion of important topics. Perhaps you can do your part by keeping the quality of discourse above the 3rd grade level? |
I am equally offended (I am black). Focusing of "choice" when addressing discriminatory practices shifts the burden to the person being discriminated against. It is morally wrong to asked the person that is being harmed to make an alternate "choice", it should be the person who is causing harm to change. |
I feel discriminated against when: I have to wait in the regular check out line when I have 11 items instead of 10. When I am not allowed to use the men's room, or the bathroom in first class. I am not invited to some parties. I have to muddle through instructuion sheets trying to find the English version. i am ingnored in more expensive stores. I am not allowed entry into an exclusive nightclub. etc. etc. etc. Discrimination is out there and everyone gets a taste of it at some point. It is trying to accomodate the needs of one group at the expense of another. Sometimes it has to be like that. |
| PP, can you clarify -- are there any forms of discrimination that are unacceptable? If yes, what are criteria over which it's not ok? Or, if there are no criteria, are there any fundamental rights with respect to which all or some discrimination should be prohibited? (voting, etc?) I'm not saying joining the BSOA is a fundamental right. I'm just trying to figure out exactly where you're coming from. |
Wow. All I can say is that you are soooooo off-base and really don't get it. Your self-righteous ignorance is stunning. |

I think it might be best that those who want to discuss the wider aspects of discrimination start another thread in which to do so. The OP of this thread has no apparent interest in getting the BSA to change its policies. In fact, I'm not sure anyone has suggested such a thing. The point of the query was to identify alternative organizations that do not have the same discriminatory policies. In fact, those alternatives could well have their own discriminatory polices to which some here might object. The OP is free to chose an organization whose policies are in line with her/his own values.
It has generally been accepted that as much as some posters regret and object to BSA's policies, as a private organization it has the right to have those policies. A debate about the rightness or wrongness of those policies or other incidences of prejudice and discrimination are outside the scope of this thread. Please start another topic for such a discussion. |
You are astonishingly stupid. |
