Have you seen the IA pay scale? https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/fy25-cis.pdf

Not many people with options want to work for $25-30k per year. If they work summer school too, maybe an extra $2 or $3k. That's not a living wage even for a single person with roommates. If you want good people to take these jobs, pay them better wages.

Minimum wage in Maryland right over the river is $15/hr. A full time worker at literally any job in MD makes the same money.

+1. And many IAs don’t get benefits. It’s a sh&tty job. If you want better people working in schools, pay them better, offer benefits, and treat them as professionals/train them as such. We currently don’t do any of that in our school system and therefore wind up with a lot of bad staff members in schools.

IAs get benefits, it’s basically the only reason to have the job. It is a salaried and full benefits job. I was an IA for about 3 years while in grad school, I had the job literally for the benefits. How anyone survives on the salary is beyond me.

Also to the homophobe in the comments raging, not that it matters, but IAs don’t get their own rooms to decorate. In no school that I’ve taught in has that ever been a thing. There is a significant difference between being tasked with supervision of a room and being responsible for that room itself.

Does an IA pay the same premium as a full-time teacher?

https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/employee-benefits-premiums.pdf

I have no recollection, we didn’t all gather round to compare premiums. My pay stubs would be more than a decade and an half old at this point.

I am not sure what the point you’re driving at though. I don’t remember ever feeling like my insurance premiums were unusual but it was also my first salaried job so I had no point of reference. At the end of the day the position isn’t really independently sustainable long term, it’s entirely deserving of a pay overhaul.

Scalea, David J Instructional Assistant $30,294.00 PER FOIA REQUEST REPORT doing the 2022-2023 school year.
I am not sure how much the pay raise was this year.

Do you have an answer to my question about healthcare premiums?

DP. I used to be an IA before I went back to teaching. Premiums are the same.

I worked as an IA. The amount that was taken out for health care and the mandatory retirement is ludicrous and practically halves the salary after taxes.

I KNOW THIS KID.

What??

I know him, I had a few classes at him at NOVA, back in 2006 era and he a nice guy, and I am friends with him on Facebook. He himself is SPED and has disabilities not going to share anything else. We have to find out what happen

A person is not "SPED".

A 40 year old man with a college degree is not a "kid".

This teacher was openly homosexual and proudly displayed pride flags in his room.

In and of itself this would not be an issue. Men like this do more damage to gay rights than anything any bigot or prejudice person could ever do.

Surprise, surprise.

But I thought men and women were the same? /s

Any man who wants to work around children or vulnerable populations should be required to undergo extreme vetting and then be monitored extensively.

The posts I quoted were about retaining quality IAs. Someone said they should get paid more. Someone said many don’t get benefits and another responded to say they do and that is basically the only reason to have the job. So I looked up the health insurance rates, posted a link, and asked if IAs and teaching staff paid the same amount for premiums. I wasn’t “driving at” anything, other than asking with the thought that paying the same premium out of a much lower salary would be tough. That matches up with your suggestion that the position is deserving of a pay (and perhaps even benefits) overhaul.

This issue isn't new at all. It also happened even at an expensive private school not too far from Langley HS. You can look that up. Langley HS is no different from other FPCS other than because it is in an expensive location. It seems like there are a lot of Langley haters here, IMHO. I am sure almost all people here would love to live in McLean and send their kids to Langley HS, if they could afford a home there.

>>said by someone who lives the same lifestyle, perhaps. Not related to this arrest, have you seen rent prices in this area? $1500+ month for a basement apartment or small studio. We are seeing college grads starting their careers not being able to "launch" in your definition. Don't be surprised when even valedictorians start shacking up with their parents.

McLean Police District— Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau have arrested a Langley High School Instructional Assistant after he was seen masturbating in a classroom.

On October 11, during school hours, a School Resource Officer was notified by school administration that a student observed an instructional assistant masturbating in a classroom behind his desk. Detectives were notified and immediately began investigating.

Preliminarily, detectives determined that David Scalea, 40, of Great Falls was in a classroom and began inappropriately touching himself underneath his desk. A student observed Scalea and immediately notified school administration. No students were physically harmed.

On October 11, Scalea was arrested and charged with Obscene Sexual Display and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Scalea was placed on administrative leave and has been an instructional assistant with Fairfax County Public Schools since 2020. He is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

I would hold my accusations on this. With the type of entitled kids at Langley it is not to far fetch to believe one of these students made up this accusation.

Wait -- there's an SRO at Langley? I thought we didn't have those in Virginia anymore?
