He works in a so called "Chill room" IF a student with an IEP needed a break from the class either a "timeout" or student needed a break they will go to that classroom. He is a great kid, I remember being friends with him, we talk every now and then.

Have you seen the IA pay scale? https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/fy25-cis.pdf

Not many people with options want to work for $25-30k per year. If they work summer school too, maybe an extra $2 or $3k. That's not a living wage even for a single person with roommates. If you want good people to take these jobs, pay them better wages.

Minimum wage in Maryland right over the river is $15/hr. A full time worker at literally any job in MD makes the same money.

+1. And many IAs don’t get benefits. It’s a sh&tty job. If you want better people working in schools, pay them better, offer benefits, and treat them as professionals/train them as such. We currently don’t do any of that in our school system and therefore wind up with a lot of bad staff members in schools.

IAs get benefits, it’s basically the only reason to have the job. It is a salaried and full benefits job. I was an IA for about 3 years while in grad school, I had the job literally for the benefits. How anyone survives on the salary is beyond me.

Also to the homophobe in the comments raging, not that it matters, but IAs don’t get their own rooms to decorate. In no school that I’ve taught in has that ever been a thing. There is a significant difference between being tasked with supervision of a room and being responsible for that room itself.

Does an IA pay the same premium as a full-time teacher?

I am not sure if I should reach out to him, I talked to every to him every now and then, still friends with him on Facebook, I haven't used in years. Last time I chat with him back in 2020 doing COVID. I had classes with him when we were in NOVA back in 2006,2007. He was a great kid- We don't know what happen but still I am shocked.

He has disabilities and you don't know him don't judge. I feel bad that we didn't talk to each other anymore...

Let's just wait to see what happens. Maybe he took the wrong medication we don't know let's wait for the facts to come out please.

Sorry, I just have to ask, what adult human being has opinions about high schools such that they’ll start a post with “I’m no fan of Langley…”? Like what normal adult believes/says something like that?

Exactly. The usual trolls are trolling. I guarantee, if this story was about a teacher or an IA at any other school, there wouldn't be nearly the outrage exhibited here.

I’ll go out on a limb and say one familiar with the school.

DP. You're not familiar with this school. You can drop the act.

Why? Because the same people who have spent three decades trying to paint gay people as perverts without any real success (and despite lots of sexual crimes on their side of the aisle) have moved on to believing flags have magical powers of deviancy?

It must be exhausting being perpetually terrified, angry, and the victim at all times.
