This is what happens when parents get confused and think they control what happens in schools and seek to micromanage curricular and individual classrooms. The good teachers had enough and quit. So, we brought it on ourselves in recent years. We get what we deserve, and we deserved this.

Yeah, no. That’s not the problem, dingbat.

With apologies to David Shannon I guess. My kids loved those books.

My adult son was born with disabilities too, PP, yet he knows better than to behave like this in public. Why on earth did you think that was going to explain anything?!?!

You're being offensive, actually. For not understanding anything about people with disabilities.

It is. Exactly.

Ima guess you're one of "those" parents.

This teacher was openly homosexual and proudly displayed pride flags in his room.

In and of itself this would not be an issue. Men like this do more damage to gay rights than anything any bigot or prejudice person could ever do.

The FCPD link says he is an instructional assistant.

Ew, David is from the tv show Schitt's Creek.

Have you seen the IA pay scale? https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/fy25-cis.pdf

Not many people with options want to work for $25-30k per year. If they work summer school too, maybe an extra $2 or $3k. That's not a living wage even for a single person with roommates. If you want good people to take these jobs, pay them better wages.

Minimum wage in Maryland right over the river is $15/hr. A full time worker at literally any job in MD makes the same money.

+1. And many IAs don’t get benefits. It’s a sh&tty job. If you want better people working in schools, pay them better, offer benefits, and treat them as professionals/train them as such. We currently don’t do any of that in our school system and therefore wind up with a lot of bad staff members in schools.

PP you replied to. I know! Why are we putting the instruction of future generations into the hands of workers who are paid next to nothing?

All critical missions should get a wage bump to retain more intelligent staff: among them, police (we don't want thugs), nurses and teachers. Because when these people fail at their jobs, the consequences can be long-lasting.

Cut the fat at Gatehouse. Pay more to those who are critical.

At that pay rate you would probably be better off nannying. IAs get treated like CNAs get treated in nursing. Doing the toughest grunt work with the most vulnerable populations and getting surprised when we don’t have enough of them or can’t get high quality staff.

Wait - they’re hiring people with ID’s to work in education??? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

McLean Police District— Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau have arrested a Langley High School Instructional Assistant after he was seen masturbating in a classroom.

On October 11, during school hours, a School Resource Officer was notified by school administration that a student observed an instructional assistant masturbating in a classroom behind his desk. Detectives were notified and immediately began investigating.

Preliminarily, detectives determined that David Scalea, 40, of Great Falls was in a classroom and began inappropriately touching himself underneath his desk. A student observed Scalea and immediately notified school administration. No students were physically harmed.

On October 11, Scalea was arrested and charged with Obscene Sexual Display and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Scalea was placed on administrative leave and has been an instructional assistant with Fairfax County Public Schools since 2020. He is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

This is disgusting.
FCPS should take a scrutiny on the staff recruiting and training process.
