McLean Police District— Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau have arrested a Langley High School Instructional Assistant after he was seen masturbating in a classroom.

On October 11, during school hours, a School Resource Officer was notified by school administration that a student observed an instructional assistant masturbating in a classroom behind his desk. Detectives were notified and immediately began investigating.

Preliminarily, detectives determined that David Scalea, 40, of Great Falls was in a classroom and began inappropriately touching himself underneath his desk. A student observed Scalea and immediately notified school administration. No students were physically harmed.

On October 11, Scalea was arrested and charged with Obscene Sexual Display and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Scalea was placed on administrative leave and has been an instructional assistant with Fairfax County Public Schools since 2020. He is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

This is disgusting.
FCPS should take a scrutiny on the staff recruiting and training process.

If he had no prior history there isn’t a way of knowing

So he’s the perfect candidate to be an aide in special Ed? Ridiculous.

This teacher was openly homosexual and proudly displayed pride flags in his room.

In and of itself this would not be an issue. Men like this do more damage to gay rights than anything any bigot or prejudice person could ever do.

Any evidence?

>>said by someone who lives the same lifestyle, perhaps. Not related to this arrest, have you seen rent prices in this area? $1500+ month for a basement apartment or small studio. We are seeing college grads starting their careers not being able to "launch" in your definition. Don't be surprised when even valedictorians start shacking up with their parents.

If you don't see the difference in a recent college grad and a 41 YO living with parents, I don't know what to tell you.

Ugh. As soon as I saw his insta feed showing his distinctive VW, I recalled him being obnoxiously rude to me. I used to sub at Langley and recall taking too long to park in the visitor lot at the front - he was behind me in the lot entrance and laid on his horn. I was doing nothing wrong other than parking. I was a sub at nearly every FCPS HS and this is the only time I’d ever had a similar encounter.

It was such weird interaction that I was shocked to see him park in the end handicap space reserved for staff - I had assumed I’d angered a student.

PP first page thought he was failure to launch living in Great Falls. You certainly got this correct. He lives with his parents and is a graduate of Langley HS.

Have you seen the IA pay scale? https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/fy25-cis.pdf

Not many people with options want to work for $25-30k per year. If they work summer school too, maybe an extra $2 or $3k. That's not a living wage even for a single person with roommates. If you want good people to take these jobs, pay them better wages.

Minimum wage in Maryland right over the river is $15/hr. A full time worker at literally any job in MD makes the same money.

+1. And many IAs don’t get benefits. It’s a sh&tty job. If you want better people working in schools, pay them better, offer benefits, and treat them as professionals/train them as such. We currently don’t do any of that in our school system and therefore wind up with a lot of bad staff members in schools.

First step is getting the federal government to pay its share for IDEA mandates. They said they would pay 40% percent of costs but only pay low teens. FCPS doesn’t have to money to pay these high special Ed costs.

If so that’s really disturbing. This guy needs to keep his sex life out of the classroom in more ways than one.

IAs get benefits, but low pay. Similar to a monitor.

Wait - they’re hiring people with ID’s to work in education??? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Yes. Have you seen the requirements for the job? High school diploma or completion of the special ed certificate program.
