Why Are College Applications So Secretive Among Private School Parents/Students But Not Among Public School Families?

As someone going through the high school application process, I wish we all did talk more. There is so much to digest about these schools that hearing what other parents and kids think and why is useful. I know some are competing but for others it is more like everyone has different goals and schools that may or may fulfill them.
