Lewis is a failed HS and a lot of time, money, and resources has been poured into Lewis over the past 5 years, with no improvement. Now they want to move high SES, non-FARMS students to come in to help fix the school? Lewis is an FCPS problem, expecting good students from stable families to come in save the school is an interesting Hail Mary by Dr Reid. No way that people who paid almost a million dollars for a 50 y.o. split level in West Springfield are going to go for that nonsense.

No dog in this fight, but that attitude needs to go. It's absolutely not FCPS's nor the taxpayer's responsibility to remove all risk from overbidding for real estate. Do you always support government intervention, or only when the government will save your bottom line?

No one overbid for a house in West Springfield, we bought in a stable district with great schools. Lewis has been mismanaged by years, including appointing a Principal and nominating him as Principal of the Year, for no accomplishment. Why was that? Enormous amounts of money, resources, staff, and trial programs have been poured into Lewis, with no results. Nearby Hayfield HS and Edison HS have a number of out of state and out of district students, no one is focused on that issue either. There are 4 other HS's closer to West Springfield, but somehow bussing West Springfield students through the Mixing Bowl during morning and evening rush hours and requiring parents and student drivers to move through that same traffic nightmare is going to help solve what issue? The traffic and bussing issue should have made this a nonstarter from the get go. WS students will now spend 1+hour commuting each way for Dr Reid's equity experiment.

No dog in the fight? Are you a taxpayer? Are you concerned about FCPS waste and abuse? Are you a county resident and tax payer? Which school district do you live in?

Actually I do not support government intervention. At all. The government is seldom concerned about the bottom line or doing what is best for the majority of citizens. The school district is spending millions to build the Dunn Loring ES, where it is not needed; spent millions to expand WestPo, when it was not needed.

Hopefully, they relieve Chantilly and Centreville as part of this first round of boundary changes. There are 100s of seats in Herndon that need to be used rather than spending 200 million to make a mega school in Centreville with a projected declining enrollment.

I say this in regards to the Lewis/WSHS comments because CV/CH are packed in like sardines and need relief now while Lewis and WS are fine and not nearly as costly. I get wanting to support Lewis enrollment numbers but that should not be the priority over the western HSs.

Fake empathy for western HS?

West Springfield is projected to be at 117% capacity in 2028, and Centreville only at 113%. And why should Centreville be denied a decent renovation the attention that Oakton, West Springfield, and Langley all received.

DP. Chantilly at 118%. I’m of the view that none should be moved, but PP has a point, why are Centreville and Chantilly exempt?

FCPS should not be picking winners and losers. If this is their new playbook, they need to be all in.

They said they have no money for building more IIRC.

And I thought the idea was that a 3000-person school wasn’t equitable from a student opportunity perspective.

So scaling this to a basic renovation and moving some boundaries is the most efficient use of seats in the near term while also saving a whole bunch of money.

Yep, the centreville expansion is unfortunately a casualty of the new policy.

You are spreading misinformation. The Centreville expansion is still in the latest CIP, which this School Board approved. So is the Dunn Loring project, for which there is less need.

There is no way they are going to expand Herndon as they did and then not add a significant number of additional seats to Centreville. Maybe only build it out to 2500, but it will still get expanded.

I mean to convey that the centreville expansion doesn’t pass muster by the board’s new metrics as enshrined in the new policy.

It’s duplicitous to say we don’t have money in the budget for unnecessary expansions so we have to redistrict while at the same time building a school out to become one of the larger schools in the county all the while with adequate seats nearby.

If the school board doesn’t kill the expansion project, we will all know why, but based on their own updated criteria, it should be killed.

The new policy is a boundary policy. It's not a policy on capital improvements.

It would be crazy if board members like Dunne, McDaniel, and Lady - all of whom are zoned for schools that were recently expanded - were to invoke the boundary change policy as a basis to avoid making appropriate investments in Centreville and other schools scheduled for renovation.

If they really want to show they care about spending money wisely, the first thing they should kill is the ridiculous Dunn Loring ES project, which is a complete waste of money. Investing in Centreville HS is not.

It would not be crazy at all as capital improvements and boundary policies are intrinsically linked by their focus on enrollment and capacity. What a silly statement.

Centreville enrollment is declining but they are overcrowded now along with Chantilly and there are seats sitting in Herndon. No need to expand; just renovate and save a lot of money. And in the meantime, just shift the boundaries and provide relief with the same sense of urgency some discussed the need to enroll more students as Louis.

They didn't need to change the boundary policy to do any of this. They have very different plans.

Centreville is still above capacity as is Chantilly, which unlike Herndon, is nearby. Expanding Centreville to accommodate both its current population and provide relief to Chantilly makes more sense than what you've proposed. Herndon can take kids from Westfield and Langley, if needed. Before that happens, there needs to be much more focus on the accuracy of the Herndon projections.

And what is "Louis"? Where are you from, anyway?

So you want kids to wait an 4-5 years for an expansion to meet the needs of the declining populations of Chantilly and Centreville. That literally doesn’t make sense. The project is done and now there is a bunch of empty seats.

Langley is under enrolled.

It makes perfect sense, if it aligns with what the Centreville and Chantilly families prefer, especially if the enrollments are tapering off a bit.

Neither Chantilly and Centreville shares a boundary with Herndon.

I guess McLean needs an expansion as well instead of relief by using Herndon seats by way of Langley boundaries?

Can you substantiate that first bold claim? ESL and high FARMS heavy schools typically do get more funding, but 'enormous' amounts? And no results? The results are different because many of the students are starting at a much different place.

Second bold statement - the only high school closer to West Springfield than Lewis is Lake Braddock. The drive to Lewis is either straight down Old Keene Mill / Franconia to Frontier or you can use the elevated section of Franconia to bypass the mall area and then go in through the Springfield Estates neighborhood. Or other students would go straight down the parkway to Frontier. This is not a terrible commute. But you know that.

Third bold statement - just a bit of exaggeration in that commute timeline...

I am a parent in the WSHS and will not (fingers crossed) be impacted by boundary changes, but if my family was we would not be engaging with the school nearly as much as we currently do with WSHS. It is simply the psychological barrier of driving through that traffic at 5pm and then back again. I don't understand how the school board thinks it will help from a community and involvement standpoint to make these families go from having a neighborhood school that can be reached via neighborhood (35mph and less) roads, to having to zip down a parkway through traffic to participate in a school activity.

Yep, SCHS makes sense and WSHS families would object but ultimately accept, but Lewis would bring about an insurrection.

South County is also trending toward long term under-enrollment. As a person who lives in this area of the county I don’t know whether to be relieved that no one seems to notice or care about us, or be a little concerned.

If the populations are declining, then why expand?

I guess McLean needs an expansion as well instead of relief by using Herndon seats by way of Langley boundaries?

Schools with flat or declining enrollments can still be over capacity and in need of expansions.

+1

People opposed to the change need to stop talking about the commute.

Not really. Yes, people living in WS near Old Keene can use the elevated section of Old Keene/Franconia to get past the mall area. But those are also the people nearest to Irving MS. They’re much closer to Irving than they are Key/Lewis.

But the leaked map that was mentioned in the Washington Examiner article had Hunt Valley going to Lewis and those neighborhoods wouldn’t use the elevated section of Franconia - they would, I’m assuming, take the parkway to Frontier near the Metro station and come up by the mall. And that is an annoying drive, especially in rush hour. There are a few bad intersections on the parkway where there are serious accidents and the buses would have to pass these areas.

No. The results are different because past school boards and superintendents weren’t dedicated enough to equity.
Luckily, this latest board is serious.

You think it's a fair trade for kids who are are already going to school in the Langley pyramid to switch to Herndon HS?!
