Dealing with judgemental old women

OP, a paci at 3 for bed is really bad for the teeth and mouth. She needs to be weaned from it. Starting now.

Mine used his until almost 4. Doctor was fine with it. Teeth were slightly protruding but it wasn't permanent.

My one that used paci until K (and then random other chewies) did not need braces. My one that never used pack kits got her braces off. There really isn’t much correlation.

FYI I am 67 years old and my generation did natural childbirth, nursed our children in public, and 'wore' them in snugglis. We did not drink while pregnant, avoided eating soft cheeses, and raw fish and the pendulum swung back and forth as to whether it was ok to have caffeine while pregnant. If you want to insult all the grandmas, go ahead. But get your facts straight.

Ok grandma. Let's get you to bed.

(That's a meme. A meme is like a funny internet thing).

Wow. Mean. You were corrected and this is how you respond?

Corrected? Do you think I don't know that women breastfed in the 80s?

All you are doing is proving true the stereotype of boomers as self involved, petty narcissists with zero self awareness. Can't wait for your whole generation to kick it so we can repair the damage.

Oh, honey.

Of all the weeks to try me, the week I have to watch two boomers drive this country off a cliff for me and my kids is NOT IT. Eff you and your entire generation.

Biden’s not a boomer…

Honey.

Ok fine. Everyone over the age of 60. Are you happy? What generation are the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe and just got rid of Chevron? What generation voted for Trump in 2016 by the highest margins? What generation is refusing to retire and move out of their houses? We will spend the next 100 years trying to right the wrongs your generation has inflicted on this country. My kids will never get the chance yours did. I have zero interest in what some old bag who was born on third and thinks she hit a triple thinks about ANYTHING, much less how I raise my kids.

Honey.

There are always exceptions but pacifier use by toddlers generally causes teeth problems and more.

You guys are all overly sensitive nincompoops.

In nearly every other country I've lived, society is informally policed by little old ladies everywhere. I've been dressed down by them for the smallest of things.

Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong.

The number of times this happens in the U.S. is now miniscule. Very rare.

Get over it and move on.

Yes, we have shut down our village of busybody old ladies who look out for everyone, with all that entails.

It was a pretty dumb thing to do. OP only has little children so she hasn't realized it yet. Eventually, maybe she will.

It’s too late for her.

Maybe when she is older and wiser.

Did I miss the part where these little old ladies are offering free childcare?

TL/DR
Anonymous
Anonymous wrote:My 3 year old daughter didn't sleep well last night, we had to do a grocery trip, and to help her relax I'd allowed the pacifier out of the car while we were shopping. She has it for bed and certain times of the day, and whilst I know she's a little older it's a huge comfort and not a huge issue for me.

Two older women together came up and spoke directly to my daughter whilst in the store and told her (clearly in my earshot) that she shouldn't have that in her mouth, that it's for babies and mommy should put it in the bin. Immediately tears started flowing from the challenge. We moved away but I didn't know what to say to them or my daughter.

I feel like an awful mom. I know I will need to remove it soon but it's her comfort and there's a slightly chaotic home life at the moment with house moving.

Whilst I hope this doesn't happen again, what should I do in these situations? How would you deal with it or have dealt with it if this happened?

"Move away from my child before I call the police."

When I'm older and wiser I'll be busy hunting for my dinner because climate change and fascism sent the world back 300 years. Thanks for your concern though! I'm sure it was worth it for your portfolio.

Are you always this transactional?

There is more to the world than child care. There is learning to live in a community, learning how to take care of oneself and others, etc.

Except these women aren't taking care of anyone. They're offering unsolicited advice to a frazzled mom just trying to get through the day. You can't have it both ways. Either we live in a village with the perks that entails or we don't. These women are offering nothing of value.

NG, BK, and ACB are Gen X.

For someone who belly aches a lot about generations, you sure get it wrong a lot!

Maybe when you are older and wiser, you will get it right.
