What are you doing for July 4th? What do you WISH you were doing for it?

Doubt OP is local if there's a train to the beach (!) That sounds amazing.

OP I like the PP's ideas. There are other ways to host/organize besides having people over and spending $$. Send a group text saying you plan to do X and does anyone want to join. Sometimes it works out awesome (we just did this for local fireworks) and sometimes no one wants to join (also happened recently) but nothing is lost.

Taking the train to the beach sounds dreamy. Have fun, OP!

What train goes to the beach? In real life from the dmv?

I'm not in the DMV. Where I live it'll be about an hour there and an hour back. So I can only stay at the beach about an hour, because bathroom!

Wear a swimsuit and pee in the ocean! Problem solved! Have a great Thursday, OP!!

Um, I'm not going into the water. Or wearing a swimsuit. (And I don't believe in peeing in the water.) I'm just going to sit on a bench a few steps up from the sand, and eat blueberries and read my book and hope dogs taking their owners for a walk will stop to say hi to me and occasionally look out at the water.

No wonder you don’t have any friends. You sound boring and rigid as hell.

Pretty sure you don't have any friends. You sound like you are lacking in social skills. DP

But I'm not wrong. . .

Well I have plans for the 4th. I'm just an ahole who calls it like it is. I own that.

Grandparents coming over to see our town parade, then we’ll come home for lunch. DH might take our older kids to fireworks if the weather cooperates. I am pregnant and tired, so I’ll stay home to relax and make sure our puppy isn’t alone with new, loud noises.

We rarely do something with friends on the 4th. It’s fine! I remember as a kid going to the movies some years, then watching some local fireworks form the top of the parking deck.

Gym, country club pool-my backyard pool is too hot, fireworks. I'm not a huge 4th of July person. Plus we have a morning flight the next day so don't want to stay out too late.

BBQ at our neighborhood pool and then more time at the pool. Easy for us and fun for kids, it's fun to socialize. Hopefully weather cooperates.

Are the 2nd Q in OP title -
Personally I'd rather be at a friend's house for BBQ but this is probably more fun for the kids (they are little and it's hard to have adult conversations with them around anyway!)

Doing nothing for the first year ever. Wish fireworks was something we could vote on. Don't like them.

Going for a hike in the morning, about an hour in to a spot with a small waterfall and swimming hole. Let the kids splash around for a bit (heck, I'll splash around too, it's hot out!), then hike back out. We'll be home by noon.

Late lunch on the grill, probably burgers.

We usually hang out on our porch and watch the neighborhood fireworks. Texted a few neighbors today to see if they'd be around, so now we have an impromptu gathering shaping up. We'll set out some bags of chips and a cooler of beer and soda for whoever wants to show up.

What do I wish I were doing? Pretty much what I have planned. Fun, active, social, but low stress.

Nothing about this is “playing it by the ear”.

I'm alone this Fourth of July, and going through an existential crisis.

I'm going to have a nice solo dinner tomorrow and watch the fireworks. Trying to feel less alone.

I'm sorry, OP. Dinner and fireworks sounds lovely.

If you don't want to be alone, rely on loved ones nearby or reach out to someone, or simply post back here.

Well, the neighbors probably have to listen to your dog’s barking all the time, so there’s that.

Boom
