based on what? Chicago crime is not good. |

When? Where? This sounds like a lie. |
| I am a parent at U Chicago. My kids walk back and forth to sports practice at Henry Crown (north, so Hyde Park side) and to labs that occur from 6:30-9pm sometimes Quad, central campus). They don’t report feeling generally unsafe, just normal alertness. They pay attention to the alerts and take Lyft late at night or walk with friends. We live in New York City, so they are used to needing to be alert and savvy about how they walk or travel around. I am more concerned as a parent. |
Teenage boys are not the best judges of what is safe/prudent! |
All this blah blah blah and yet where were they when the girls was being robbed at gunpoint? Nowhere. They were exactly as useless as that guy who was sitting there watching. |
You also don't know how you'll react until it happens. I once had my wallet stolen at Union Station. I chased the guy down and made a big scene confronting him and there happened to be a Metro policeman who heard and who came running. The thief handed me my wallet back and ran. The thief wasn't brandishing a gun, and I probably wouldn't have done it if he was, but the point is that I didn't think about it, I just did it. I thought the cop was going to scold me, but he said "Good for you! I wish more people would stick up for themselves." Of course, today I'd probably be prosecuted for theft for getting my own wallet back. |
My son is at Chicago and has reported feeling safe on campus. Walks with friends at night. Said there are security people all over. He did text me about the latest incident and said it gave him pause because it was mid afternoon and on campus. Hoping it’s isolate/random. |
I was with you until this idiotic sentence. |

It’s prob smart for all of us to educate ourselves of the environment where our kids go to school.

You seem to have a knack for writing idiotic statements. |
| It’s a tough area around there. |

Maybe let us try to be plain spoken and frank? The campus is like a duck pond full of easy marks. Thousands and thousands of students and teachers most of whom have never had to deal with this kind of criminal aggression. And yet it continues as one of the world's best.
We can demand that campus security gets better and appreciate what they have managed to do at the same time. My kid will be there next year and I will for darn sure be pushing them to do more |
Amen! I’m so tired of hearing about a cop on every corner & emergency call boxes & other bandaids they slap on a very serious problem & tell us the problem is cured. The bad guys are experts at finding gaps in the protection, & if they are around they will find an opportunity to strike, EVEN IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. It used to be there was at least a little concern about getting caught & doing some time, but not now. |

Police apprehend criminals. They aren't guards.
If you want guards, hire guards. The President has guards. |
