Unfortunately, after that Marine, the Penney guy, got arrested and charged in NYC for being a good Samaritan on the subway, saving many lives, many people have decided it is not worth it to intervene in these situations

And it’s not worth it if the perpetrator has a gun. Would you intervene against a guy w a gun who is trying to mug a stranger? You are going to get yourself killed.

Especially since that guy with a gun will likely be released after his arrest.

If you want guards, hire guards. The President has guards.

My kids walk back and forth to sports practice at Henry Crown (north, so Hyde Park side) and to labs that occur from 6:30-9pm sometimes Quad, central campus). They don’t report feeling generally unsafe, just normal alertness. They pay attention to the alerts and take Lyft late at night or walk with friends. We live in New York City, so they are used to needing to be alert and savvy about how they walk or travel around. I am more concerned as a parent.

Teenage boys are not the best judges of what is safe/prudent!

+1 for sure

It's not even worth getting punched in the face for a stranger.

Why not Northwestern? Do you think that the Northwestern campus itself is not safe or are you concerned about students going off-campus into Chicago on the weekend?

Speak for yourself. He’d be a hero in my book if he helped.

🙄 Which would be a great comfort to him if he was arrested and prosecuted. Or maybe stabbed or shot by the criminal.

Live coward or dead hero is a choice we all make.

Tell that to hero Daniel Penny.

Northwestern is very safe.

We have visited it several times, walking around Evanston. We also have family in the area that echo this. Northwestern is safe. U of Chicago is sketchy because of the neighborhoods surrounding it.

Why are you trying to rationalize living in fear of violent crime? Being “alert” and needing ride share to avoid getting a gun in your face is not “normal” and should never be accepted or rationalized. You’re also flirting with victim blaming, as if victims of robberies or worse must not have been street smart or “alert”. This crap should not be happening, PERIOD.

Look at the increase in crime lately. Data speaks.
Migrants have been bussed to Evanston and Wilmette ; tent cities/homelessness everywhere

How do you find these reports from a city halfway across the country so fast and why do you care?

If you are seriously considering, make sure you get access so you can see the sheer number of urgent security alerts that go out every single day.

And if you are set on sending your kid here:
Make sure you hire security for them to follow them around. I’m not kidding.
Parents have pooled together to hire their own Security/drivers etc.

When? Where? This sounds like a lie.

Parents are doing this at Berkeley.

There’s a PI agency everyone in Chicago uses for security. And there are some national companies as well.

They typically do an on /off rotation and will be parked outside the dorm and just follow your kid around after hours.

The scariest part of this incident was that it happened during the day.

That's just a motto, not a legal duty. Castle Rock v. Gonzales, No. 04-278, police are under no obligation to enforce the law, even if doing so could save lives.
