PSA: It is ILLEGAL in VA to drive slow in the left lane of any multi lane road

Anonymous
Left lane cruisers should be fined for all the time they waste. Stealing time from others is a terrible terrible things to do.

It’s not debatable. Drive right, pass left.

The left lane is for passing not cruising above the speed limit. The posted speed is the UPPER limit any car should be traveling in good weather conditions. Just because others are deriving too fast, is not an excuse. Keeping up with speed limit law breakers is no excuse for fast driving. Use the right lane only to pass.

You should not drive, you are putting all of us in danger. People like you should not drive.

Why are NoVa drivers driving 40 miles an hour on I-66 that is empty? Not during rush hour, and the speed limit is 55?

I-66 is never empty, not even at 1am…

The law applies there. If you can't maintain the speed of traffic for a half mile before your exit, you really shouldn't be driving.

Or if you're lingering in the left exit lane for more than a half mile before the exit, you're the ahole.

One had better be in that specific exit lane more than 1 mile ahead. People will not permit one to switch left just before the exit. And a State Police person pointed that out.

It is most certainly almost empty, with very little traffic around 7 PM from Arlington to Falls Church.

No speeders put everyone in danger. PP was explaining the law.

And we are told that only Maryland drivers are bad!

The OP is the kind of “toad-of-toad-hall” type that makes driving in this area such a clown show. Difficult to ask people to drive with wisdom and consideration when they don’t express these qualities in other aspects of their life. When traffic is going speed limit +10 or so and roads are packed you are going to have to practice patience. Tailgating and weaving in and out of traffic causes people to slam on their breaks to avoid your “fast and furious” moves, which just snarls up traffic behind you and makes the roads worse for everyone. It is inconsiderate and selfish behavior. Not to mention you’ll often end up at the same spot as people you passed at the next red light or next accident. Your time is not more valuable than those around you - chill out and leave earlier next time if you are always running late.

The attempting bullying reality-free rapid responses “cops are going to give you a ticket if you get in my way” just add to that impression.

I wonder if the high rates of autism and adhd in this area contribute or are these people just jerks? The lack of social connections with neighbors certainly takes shame out of the equation and leads to a lot of selfishness.

PSA for the PSA giver: if “everyone on the road is an idiot” time to use some of that fast-processing for self-reflection- you are the jerk.

I assume when people are going below the speed limit they’re going as fast as they can. When I pass and glance over, I see people, sometimes very elderly, tense and staring at the road. These people do not look like they want to be driving. I bet they would take public transportation if it were an option. But they need in the country we have, which is one where half the people get upset that the other half, who don’t have the same abilities also have to live.

Well that's a relief. I always assume anyone below the speed limit is distracted on their phone.

*If you can't resist it put the phone in the back seat people*

Yeah, that makes no sense. Elderly people are not in the left lane on highways. Plus, it doesn't explain why so many are driving that slow on a 55-mile highway.

As mentioned, dozens and dozens of drivers going around 40 on 66 when nobody is there, cannot be attributed to elderly drivers.

That’s the real issue here and if you haven’t experienced it I suggest you drive more.

Yes but 75 in left lane and the people coming up at 85-90 --- you have to get out of left lane or you will get a ticket. As I said above troopers will ticket you, not the speeders. The left lane driver is the one that causes accidents not the speeding by itself.

I very sincerely doubt this. Your are living in fantasy land if you think the above scenario will ever happen. And anyone who receives a ticket for this “infraction” should fight it because they will win. Literally on the test to get your permit there are questions that driving over the speed limit is not allowed not even to pass. This “new law” has holes in it big enough to drive a Mack truck through.

If you are driving 60 in the left hand lane and no one can go
around you because the person in the right lane is also going 60 or even 55 then that is what causes accidents.

Get over there is absolutely no reason to be in the left lane if you are going the speed limit.

If you are in bumper to bumper going 35-40 fine, but that isn’t what causes accidents.
