PSA: It is ILLEGAL in VA to drive slow in the left lane of any multi lane road

Anonymous
I drive in the left lane when the right is in a pack, to get away from the pack, so I’ll go as
much as 10 mph i’ve the limit, but if at anytime anyone comes up behind me I get over before they even get close to me.

Or as soon as there is some cushion in the right lane I get over, I abhor the pack. I’m just trying to stay accident free and alive on the highway.

I-66 is never empty, not even at 1am…

It is most certainly almost empty, with very little traffic around 7 PM from Arlington to Falls Church.

I assume when people are going below the speed limit they’re going as fast as they can. When I pass and glance over, I see people, sometimes very elderly, tense and staring at the road. These people do not look like they want to be driving. I bet they would take public transportation if it were an option. But they need in the country we have, which is one where half the people get upset that the other half, who don’t have the same abilities also have to live.

Well that's a relief. I always assume anyone below the speed limit is distracted on their phone.

*If you can't resist it put the phone in the back seat people*

As mentioned, dozens and dozens of drivers going around 40 on 66 when nobody is there, cannot be attributed to elderly drivers.

It was mentioned, but that doesn't mean it's actually happening

PSA: the definition of driving slow in the left lane isn't set by you, so chill on the tailgating.

You are incorrect. The definition of dricving slow in the lane is defined as "slowER." It's relative. If there is traffic coming behind you that wants to go faster, you need to move right. And no one is tailgating you out of nowhere or out of the blue - check your mirrors every 2 seconds.

The same people who drive slow in the left lane, are the same people who don't know what a 'stop line' is, and stop like this at red lights. For the morons, the white car is in the wrong here.

VDOT agrees - left lane campers are The Problem.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. No one would be tailgating you in the left lane... if you quit slowing everyone down in the left lane. The problem here isn't the tailgaters - it's the one leading the parade.

I did a 3500 mile road trip in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast this summer. And guess what? Every place has signs for slower traffic to keep right or keep right unless passing. IT was AMAZING! People actually paid attention to that. And no one died! Double amazing.

Predictably, though, get back within 100 miles of DC and the highways become a sh*t show.

Just slow you know left lane campers, being a moving chicane is NOT a laudable goal.

+1

It’s all relative.

If it’s too complicated to known when it’s ok to pass just stay in the right lane.

People blocking the flow of traffic ruin it for the rest of us.

I noticed this summer that many NH drivers stay in the left lane. It’s not just the pricks from VA.

Haha. Well done, VADOT.

Yes, we all hate the people who overstay in the left lane.

Okay but in that image none of those people are passing so shouldn’t they all be in the right lane? There’s plenty of space for them. They shouldn’t move over until they can pass according to this, right?

In reality, this area is so insanely congested the thought of avoiding 1/2 or 1/3 of the lanes makes my head hurt. (And I am diligent about moving over any time someone is approaching me from behind, but I’m not going to avoid the left lane entirely at rush hour.)

You should definitely never drive in the left lane since you can’t properly evaluate what is happening in the photo.

Are these left lane turds just stupid like PP? They don’t have the mental capacity to understand when to change lanes?

This area is not THAT congested much of the time.

Just another day on the Beltway.

The left lane absolutely is for passing.

A major problem, though, is the growing number of left exits and the absolute refusal of people to let you into the left lane to exit. Not to mention the people who tailgate and are absolute a$$h0les when you are in the left lane, going above the speed limit, with your blinker on clearly signaling that you are preparing to exit.

Also if you are in the left lane driving above the speed limit and faster than surrounding traffic, but someone absolutely insists on driving 100 mph and forces you over.

Really, this area is just full of jerkish drivers.

Stay right, pass left is a universal rule of the road. Don’t blame others for your inability to follow it.
