Are cars not equipped with brakes standard these days? Or are we talking about a SPEED scenario? |
Also, how dumb are you? It’s not manslaughter to be going the speed limit in the left lane just because some lunatic doesn’t know how to drive and rear ends you. I am not sure if you are aware but the speed LIMIT is the upper threshold you are allowed to travel. Going above that is breaking the law. So, just because I’m not passing someone as quickly as you’d like, they’re not going to initiate the Nuremberg trials. |
Honest question. Why do you think the law was written "speed of traffic" instead of "speed limit" with regards to left lane campers? Do you think it was an accident in the wording? Or do you think lawmakers are practical and know that driving is nuanced and that sometimes going above the speed limit is safe and normal? |
| We drove to Asheville last weekend (down 81) and good lord almighty, the number of people driving in the left lane, going 62 or 63, without a care in the world, was pretty constant. It was so much worse than driving down 95. Trucks packed into the right lane, so the slowpokes in the left lane can be unpassable for 10-15 miles. |
The law refers to "the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions existing," which means how traffic flows under the existing conditions. So, in heavy rain or a snowstorm, the normal rate of traffic under the existing conditions is going to be less than the speed limit, which is the maximum speed the law allows regardless of the conditions. You aren't required to go the maximum speed if it isn't safe to do so. It's still "reckless driving" to go more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit or over 80, so the's no way the legislature intended to give left lane drivers free rein to drive as fast as they want in the left and force anyone looking to pass or exit to the left to also engage in reckless driving. In addition, the law states that drives should stay right "except when overtaking and passing another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn" so again, if you are pissed off because that left-exiting driver is preventing you from going 100, you are totally in the wrong. The driver exiting to the left who is going the speed limit or above is doing nothing wrong. |
Because the speed of traffic might be lower than the speed limit, knucklehead. The mental gymnastics on display here is astounding. The speed LIMIT is the legal limit which you may not exceed under any circumstances. It’s not “nuanced”. |
Well if they’re exceeding the speed limit, that is against the law |
| Ok. True. But the aggressive divers in this thread seem to think drivers are required to be as reckless as they are in order to occupy space in the left lane. |
When you are no longer passing the middle lane and have opportunity to move over. Its okay to repetitively pass people while driving down a long stretch of highway. It is not weaving in and out of traffic. It doesnt need to be completely clear ahead of you in the middle lane to move over. It is my belief that people who drive "cruising" where they take a lane are afraid to drive behind other people and arent good drivers because they dont like merging lanes/exit lanes. It's all very passive drivers who dont actually want to have to pay attention. |

Hopefully it is the same jerk you wants people to move out of “his” lane so he can go 90 in a 65 (because he is a “good driver”).
Speed limit is speed limit. Reckless speed is reckless speed. You don’t get to “chose” what you think is reasonable. This thread has made me reflect - I’m going to reduce my cruising speed back to 65 (from usual 75-ish). Good job left lane speeding jerk. |
