That’s the real issue here and if you haven’t experienced it I suggest you drive more.

Yes but 75 in left lane and the people coming up at 85-90 --- you have to get out of left lane or you will get a ticket. As I said above troopers will ticket you, not the speeders. The left lane driver is the one that causes accidents not the speeding by itself.

I very sincerely doubt this. Your are living in fantasy land if you think the above scenario will ever happen. And anyone who receives a ticket for this “infraction” should fight it because they will win. Literally on the test to get your permit there are questions that driving over the speed limit is not allowed not even to pass. This “new law” has holes in it big enough to drive a Mack truck through.

Wrong. Let's do a quick review of Virginia law. Unlike many states, Virginia has made reckless driving a class 1 misdemeanor (that means, a criminal offense) and carries a minimum $250 fine. Going 20 mph over the speed limit or over 85mph is reckless driving. Troopers are going to ticket the reckless driver every time over a piddly $100 fine that won't hold up in court.

I wish they would crack down on the reckless drivers. Every time I drive on 95 or 66 there are idiots driving 85 or faster and changing lanes every few seconds. So dangerous.

I can't envision any highway in the DMV where all the traffic is in the right lane and only the very few are using the left lane to pass.

In fact, enforcing "left lane is for passing only" is just a ticket for many drivers to go as fast as they possibly can in the left lane, claiming they're "passing."

What this law applies to, is for those driving in the left lane and not quickly moving over to the right lane when you see someone approaching behind you. Too many people cruise in the left lane and do not move over, or don't pay attention to their mirrors and see that someone faster is approaching. They'll claim "someone started tailgaiting me out of nowhere!" Sorry, but that doesn't happen. It's because you were spaced out and not paying attention.

Bumper to bumper traffic is different.

No one is getting ticketed in VA for driving slow in the left lane bc there are left exits, left turns, and left on-ramps. That’s the real reason driving around here is more stressful than a better planned out state.

These drivers have anger management issues. Driving 90 mph will only get you there maybe 3 minutes faster. How about you plan better and leave early so you don’t get all bent out of shape when you can’t drive 90 in the left lane. You are the one causing the accidents. Chill.

PSA: It’s ILLEGAL to drive 20 mph in most states. it’s considered reckless driving. Left lane is not for driving fast, it’s for passing. After you pass, drive the posted speed limit.

PP, you sound like an ass. It’s drivers like you causing accidents, weaving in and out of traffic. You’re probably a jerk.

PSA - This will NEVER EVER in your lifetime be enforced by anyone in law enforcement.

+1 they won’t get pulled over for going slow, but they will get pulled over for driving in the left lane, which everyone acknowledges is just the technical reason for the ticket. The real reason is they are being a pia and unnecessarily causing a traffic backup because they think they set societal norms.

Google ‘campers getting pulled over by police’. You aren’t allowed to ‘camp your a!!’ In the left lane.

Yes, let’s do a quick review of VA law:

§ 46.2-842.1. Drivers to give way to certain overtaking vehicles on divided highways.
It shall be unlawful to fail to give way to overtaking traffic when driving a motor vehicle to the left and abreast of another motor vehicle on a divided highway. The driver of the overtaken vehicle shall move to the right to allow the overtaking vehicle to pass as soon as the overtaken vehicle can safely do so. A violation of this section shall not be construed as negligence per se in any civil action.

You are not allowed to exceed the speed limit even when passing.

Anonymous wrote:Many don't know this, but is actually against the law to drive slower in the left lane of ANY multi-lane road in VA. Not just a highway. Not just 66, 495, etc. But ANY roadway divided into 2 or more lanes. Even if there are stop lights.

The law: § 46.2-804.
Whenever any roadway has been divided into clearly marked lanes for traffic, drivers of vehicles shall obey the following:

1. Any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions existing, shall be driven in the lane nearest the right edge or right curb of the highway when such lane is available for travel except when overtaking and passing another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn or where right lanes are reserved for slow-moving traffic as permitted in this section;

It does not mean driving lower than the speed limit. But "the speed of traffic." It's is relative, and "slower traffic keep right" is not about the speed limit. Thankfully, police are actually beginning to crackdown on left lane cruisers.

PSA: You are a JERK. You are the one causing all the accidents.

Just. Move. Over.

If you are nit passing someone, put your turn signal on and Wednesday to do so move back to the right. Why is this so difficult?

I lived in Germany where they often had only 2 lanes, virtually no speed limits and truck engine were modulate so they could go more than ~50 MPH. But driving on highways still worked better. A car coming up behind you would flash their lights and people moved over- often even slowing down to move over until the faster car passes. No one was bent out of shape b/c someone wanted to pass them.

Honestly, one of the hardest things to get used to coming back to the US was driving on the highways.
