If we’re slinging insults across town, UCLA recently shut down Bruin Woods camp amid sexual assault and hazing lawsuit, affecting former alumni, staff and children coerced to get naked, drink alcohol and jump in a lake. The history of abuse spans decades apparently. So What’s your actual point? That couldn’t also be made about every other college or institution in America? |
Why is this thread now about the Obama kids? Op, my good friend had 3 kids graduate from USC and they all had a great experience. He's wealthy, but didn't grow up with money so raised his kids to work for the things they wanted (though he paid for their college expenses so they all graduated debt free - they had to get jobs for pizza/beer/Spring Break/concerts $). The oldest was hired by Google after graduation, the second kid went to some kind of tech/education related start up and the youngest went into the film industry. They all used USC contacts to get their jobs and it sounds like the alumni base was helpful and generous with their time/advice. They're from the Midwest, but loved the California weather and vibe so all remained in the state. |
The point is for OP to do a tour of the campus. Don't just rely on DUUM to decide your kid's college choice. |
And if you compare the actual Campuses, the buildings, investment in the properties, modernization, USC wins. hands down. |
Mmmmhmmmm. And avoid the crazy DCUM posters who have it in for any one college in particular, who will post nasty comments repeatedly, Right PP? |
BOTH UCLA and USC have nice campuses. I love the historic feel of UCLA’s, but USC has an amazing alumni network. The two schools are at such different price points that they don’t usually get the same applicants. |
Why do idiots on DCUM think that just because someone asks a question here, they aren't also researching in other ways? It's a bizarre assumption. Plane tickets to LA are expensive, so using other ways of researching first makes sense. |
Are you the CA resident? Your statement may be true for in-state applicants. For OOS the tuition costs are comparable so it comes down to a real comparison of what each college offers. My OOS DC didn’t even consider at UCLA after an early perusal. That’s not a dig on UCLA. But USC had everything she was looking for including undergrad direct admit to business. |

I appreciate the comparisons between USC and UCLA, but UCLA will almost certainly be out of budget for us.
|
Yes I am in-state. Your comment confirms my point. They don’t get similar applicants. They’re both excellent schools, but have a different purpose and serve different populations. |
We are looking at a variety of schools. USC has a higher ranking for his desired major than any of those, and guaranteed merit for NMFs. Plus it has an EC he loves. So, on paper, it looks like a really good fit. Our plan is to apply widely, and for the more distant schools to visit if he gets in and it's affordable, unless we're considering an ED, which it looks like USC doesn't have. |
This and the post about not affording USC are both OP. |
The one calling someone an idiot (not proud, but I admit it) is also. |
I don’t think this is correct, the guidebooks always note USC and UCLA as schools with a high degree of overlap among applicants. Nor is that particularly surprising, they have more similarities than differences— excellent academics and athletics, big Greek life, large schools in SoCal. |
